away unexpectedly at home on September 1, 2024, at the age of 77. Born in Christiansburg,
Virginia on March 11, 1947 to the late Pearl Chapman and Mary Marguerite Mattox, John lived a
life of service, faith, and love. A proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force, John was always ready to
lend a helping hand, embodying the spirit of generosity in every aspect of his life.
John's deep faith guided him through life, as he continually sought a closer relationship with
God. This pursuit of faith was evident in his desire to share his faith with others, the kindness
and compassion he showed to everyone he met, and how he always placed others before
himself.
One of John’s greatest joys, other than telling others about the benefits of Vitamin C, was filling
his home with the laughter and love of his family. Nothing made him happier than gathering his
loved ones together and sharing a meal. His brisket, ribs, and steaks were legendary, and the
warmth of his hospitality was felt by all who had the privilege of sitting at his table.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Kathy Bonidie Mattox, who stood by his side
through all of life's adventures. He also leaves behind his cherished children, John Wayne
Mattox II and his wife Amy, and Dayna Mattox Lund and her husband Chris. John's legacy
continues through his eight grandchildren, whom he adored: Landon Mattox (26), Cameron
Perret (26), Jadon Mattox (24), Trinity Mattox (20), Lauren Lund (20), Drake Lund (17), Nolan
Perret (16), and Zach Lund (14). He is survived by his two sisters, Alma Jean Mattox Nixon and
Mary Elizabeth Mattox Lewis, and brother and sister-in-laws, Robert and Irene Bonidie, and
Troy and Cindy Bonidie. He will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews., Marla Payne,
Kelli Miller, Dawnna Lewis, Kristi Johnson, Stephanie Shumpert, Ciarra Bonidie, Melanie
Bonidie, Angelo Bonidie, Chloe Bonidie, and Gianni Bonidie.
John's love, faith, and commitment to his family will be forever remembered. His absence leaves
a void that can never be filled, but the memories of his generosity, his warmth, his unique sense
of humor, and his unwavering love for his family will remain in our hearts. He was a man who
truly lived his life in service to others, and we pray his legacy will continue to inspire those who
were fortunate enough to know him.
May he rest in peace, knowing that his life was a testament to the values he held dear, and that
his memory will live on in the lives of those he touched.
