

Mavis Brooks Powell passed away peacefully on December 21 2017 in Jacksonville Florida.
Born January 1, 1930, in Jacksonville, she was the adored only child of Erwin T and Mavis McCarn Brooks.
She graduated from Landon High School and Mt. Vernon College in Washington D.C. Mavis was a past Queen of the Revelers and was a debutante in Jacksonville. While at Mt. Vernon she met Albert Lee Powell, who was attending Washington and Lee University, and they were married soon after he graduated.
She was extremely involved in charitable community activities including: the American Heart Association, the Cummer Art Gallery, and the Jacksonville Symphony Guild.
Mavis was a talented interior decorator and owned an antique shop in the Avondale area, Avenue Antiques.
Later in life she married Mitchell Drew of Tallahassee. She was a member of St. Marks Episcopal Church
She is survived by her daughters: Brooke Powell Stein and Lee Powell Cooney; her grandchildren: Ashley Stein Wotiz, Kimberly Stein Tonning, Kelly Stein Kuntz, Brooke Dowling Lane, James Talaiferro Lane III, Andrew Sean Cooney, and Tyler Powell Cooney; her sons-in-law: Martin “Hap” Stein, Andrew Sean Cooney Jr., and James Talaifero Lane, Jr. Mavis’ beloved daughter Kim Powell Lane pre deceased her.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery, 4801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, Florida, 32207, on Saturday, January 6, 2017, at 2:00 P.M., with the Rev. Neely Towe officiating.
