After graduating from W.B Ray High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, Nelda joined the United States Army where in addition to serving as a Quartermaster, she was one of the last members of the organization formerly known as the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC). It was while she was stationed in Fort Lee Virginia that she met Frank Leon. The two were wed in 1979 and spent the next 41 years building a lifetime of beautiful memories starting their family, traveling across the country and other countless adventures.
Nelda was dedicated to her children from the day she became a mother and spent most of her children’s lives as a stay-at-home mother which allowed her to be there for every milestone and achievement. When her children were school aged she took a position with the Department of Defense where she remained for many years.
Nelda had full faith in Jesus Christ and had placed her trust in His gift of eternal life. At the time of her passing she was a member of Elevate Life Church in Jacksonville, Florida under Pastor Tony Mallory.
Those who knew Nelda would tell you she never met a stranger. She was generous, kind and caring beyond measure. She was the definition of love. And she made sure everyone she loved always knew how much she loved them whether it was through actions, her tears (she was a crier), her huge hugs, her sweet kisses on the cheek or simply by saying “I love you sweetheart”.
In addition to her parents Alberto and Feliciana, Nelda was preceded in death by her daughter Nadia Leon.
On Wednesday September 1, 2021, Nelda traded her earthly body in for her Heavenly crown when she went home to be with the Lord where we know after He embraced her she ran to be reunited with her daughter Nadia.
Nelda’s genuine heart and beautiful spirit will truly be missed by those who were blessed to have shared space with her on this earth. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 41 years Frank Leon, her children Natalie, James, Frank, Melinda and Maurita. Her grandchildren Michael, Jessica, Melquan, Diana, Melaijah, Pablo, Donavan, Norsean, Mylisa, Vanessa, Antonio, Carlos, Jeremiah, Deja, Adam, and Jada, 12 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends whom she considered family.
"Some glad morning when this life is over, I'll fly away to that home on God's celestial shore,
I'll fly away..."
