December 3, 1978 – May 5, 2025
Nicholas Scott Strate — simply Nick to his friends and family — beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend, passed away suddenly from a heart attack on May 5, 2025, at the age of 46.
He is survived by his loving wife Kari, daughters Goldie and Fiona, his parents George and Kim, and his brother Matt and sister-in-law Jessica.
Nick was born on December 3, 1978, and raised in Atlantic Beach, Florida. He graduated from Stanton College Preparatory School, attended American University, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Florida.
Known for his sharp wit, big heart, and boundless energy, Nick brought laughter and light into every room he entered. He was smart, adventurous, and never passed up a chance to have fun (always down to clown, as those who knew him best would say).
Nick had a lifelong love of music — he was a devoted record collector, always up on the latest artists. From a young age, Nick had a passion for travel and explored the world on his own. He also loved reading and was an insatiable learner, forever curious and never tiring of discovering something new.
Nick met the love of his life, Kari, about 14 years ago while in New York for work. The two Jacksonville natives and Stanton alums married in a beautiful Florida ceremony in 2015 and lived in NYC for several happy years before settling in Neptune Beach.
Nick and Kari built a warm and joy-filled life together with their two daughters, Goldie and Fiona. He adored being a dad. He was the kind of father every kid hopes for: playful, supportive, loving, and always up for an adventure. Whether it was cooking a big family meal, casting a fishing line with his dad and brother, playing guitar for his girls, or taking trips to national parks and the beach, Nick embraced life with joy and curiosity.
Nick was a loyal friend — the kind who showed up, listened deeply, and made you laugh when you needed it most. He made many childhood friends who remained his closest companions throughout his life.
Nick’s passing leaves a huge hole in the hearts of everyone who loved him. He will be remembered for his humor, kindness, deep love for his family, and the joy he brought to all who knew him.
A celebration of Nick’s life will be held Thursday, May 15th at Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park - Dolphin Plaza, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the college fund being established for Goldie and Fiona (link below), or simply asks that you honor Nick by spending time in nature, laughing loud, and loving big, just as he did.
