Born on June 4, 1942, in Nellis, West Virginia, he was a standout All-Star athlete and proud graduate of Sherman High School. In 1960, he followed his ambition to Jacksonville, Florida, where he graduated from the Florida Barber College. Shortly after, he became the owner of the Bob’s Barbershop in Atlantic Beach. For over six decades—from the age of 18 until he was 81—he stood behind his chair, serving as a constant in the lives of multiple generations. To the Beaches community, he was more than a barber; he was a friend, a fixture, and a keeper of local history.
He was preceded in death by wife of 64 years, Delores Perdue Thompson, and his parents Roy and Elma Thompson. He is survived by his daughters Cindy Thompson Anderson and Missy Thompson Clapp (Rob); grandchildren Elizabeth Anderson Slobodian (Joe); Alexis Anderson McLaughlin (Darren); Christopher Clapp (Kelly); Eric Clapp; and Bobby Anderson (Amber); great grandchildren Reed, Avery, Haven and Calli Anderson, and Annie Clapp. He is also survived by his brother Gene Thompson (Tom Serdar), sister Marsha Thompson Bonham, sister-in-law Donna Perdue Sheppard, and brother-in-law Tom Perdue.
Also known as Bob the Barber (a Beaches legend), Bob adored his family and friends, loved the Jacksonville Jaguars and Florida Gators, and loved attending his grandchildren’s activities.
The family would like to thank Dr. Sarfaraz Dhanji of Magnus Direct Primary Care; and Sheila Hardtke and the nurses on staff at Anthem Lakes for their exceptional care and kindness to Bob during his time there.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 1 from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., followed by the service at East Pointe Church at 270 Kernan Blvd. North, Jacksonville, Florida 32225, officiated by Dr. David Patrick.
Pallbearers will be Rob Clapp, Christopher Clapp, Bobby Anderson, Joe Slobodian, and Darren McLaughlin.
