
William Delavan Baldwin, II died Saturday, March 18, 2017. He was 89 years old. Mr. Baldwin is survived by his wife, Sally Smith Baldwin, his children: William Delavan, III (Lychel); Sara Baldwin Flynn; Arnold Sullivan (Lisa), and Charles London (Adrienne); grandchildren: William Delavan Baldwin V; Mary Margaret Baldwin; Dylan Baldwin; Madeline Baldwin; Katherin B. Sanders; John D. Sanders; Charles H. Flynn; Christopher A. Baldwin; Sabrie S. Baldwin; Carolina Grace Baldwin, Tyler L. Baldwin, and three great grandchildren: Christopher Coen Baldwin, Jack Walker Baldwin and Cheyenne Christine Baldwin; and several nieces and nephews; stepdaughter, Julie Goeldner Johnson (Michael); stepson, Richard W. Goeldner, Jr. (Sandra); step grandchildren: Catie and Meg Johnson and Alex and Tripp Goeldner. He is predeceased by his parents and grandparents, his sister, Sheldon B. Boney, his brother-in-law, Paisley Boney, III, and a grandson, William Delavan Baldwin, IV.
Mr. Baldwin was a native of Jacksonville, FL, born on March 25,1927. His parents were Roland Dennis Baldwin and Pearl Sheldon Smith Baldwin. He graduated from The Bolles School (Class of 1944), and the University of Virginia (Class of 1950). He served in the U. S. Navy Reserves as a Hospital Corpsman and Pharmacist Mate during World War II. He did graduate studies at The Wharton School of Business and Finance at The University of Pennsylvania. He worked at Security Federal Savings and Loan Assn. in Jacksonville, where he became its President and Managing Officer. That institution was later merged with Florida Federal Savings and Loan Assn. where he became Regional Vice President in North Florida. He was active in Savings & Loan Assn. committees locally and statewide serving on the Finance Committee for the Florida Savings and Loan League. In 1982, he left the savings and loan business and went to work at St. John's Episcopal Cathedral in Jacksonville as Administrator for Properties, Finance and the Cathedral's ministry to the poor in Jacksonville. He retired there in 1994.
He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral from 1953-2017 where he was a lay reader and an usher. He served as a member of its Vestry, was Senior Warden of the Vestry, a leader in the Cathedral's ministry to AIDS victims, and initiated the tours of the Cathedral. He served on the Board of Directors of the Cathedral Foundation, the Building Committee of The Cummings Memorial Chapel and Chairman of the Cathedral's Planning Commission and Restoration Committee. He represented the Cathedral on the Board of Directors of the Downtown Ecumenical Services Council and served as its Treasurer. He served the Episcopal Diocese of Florida on the following Committees: Christian Social Relations; Christian Outreach Commission; Executive Committee, and the Standing Committee, and was a Deputy to the 67th General Convention of the Episcopal Church in 1982. He served as Treasurer for the Fourth Province of the Episcopal Church for 9 years. He served on the Board of Visitors of the Kanuga Episcopal Conference Center and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Drew Foundation, and as President of the Church Alliance of Greater Jacksonville. He served on the first Board of Directors of the Bible Reading Fellowship in 1972. He was active in the renewal movement in the Episcopal Church. At St. John's, he participated in 1978, in the first Community of Cross of Nails Foyer Groups, was a Director of the Chapter of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, was Co-chairman of a Lay Witness Mission, the precursor to Faith Alive Weekends. He was one of the first Faith Alive Weekend Coordinators, leading 15 Weekends in large churches across the South and as far west as Houston, TX and as far north as Ohio, and was considered by many to be the premier Coordinator. He was a Regional Coordinator and served on Board of Directors and as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Faith Alive 1974 - 1976. He later led 10 Alpha Courses at St John's Cathedral. He a was a member of the Cursillo community and was an active member of a Reunion Group.
He served as Treasurer, Vice President and was on the Board of Directors of the Jacksonville Symphony Assn. He was on the Boards of the Bolles School, the Children’s Home Society of Northeast Florida, the American Cancer Society, the Local Selective Service Board, L. B. 76; Chief of the Sioux Nation of the Timuquan Federation in the YMCA Indian Guides program. Fraternal memberships: Ionic Lodge No. 101 F.& AM.; Scottish Rite; Morocco Temple Shriners; Phi Kappa Sigma, Eta Chapter; Meninak Club; Friars Club; Ye Mystic Revellers Treasurer, Past Captain and Past King. He held memberships in The New York Genealogical Society; The Society of Mayflower Descendants; The Fuller Society; Georgia Salzburger Society; The Thomas Munson Foundation, Ephraim Clan, and The Van Voorhees Assn. He was a member of The Ponte Vedra Inn and Club. and was formerly a member of The Florida Yacht Club and The Timuquana Country Club.
His funeral will be on Wednesday, 11:00 am March 22, 2017, at St. John's Episcopal Cathedral, 256 East Church Street, Jacksonville, FL, The Very Rev. Kate Moorehead officiating, The Rev. Ted Schroder, Rector of Amelia Island Plantation Chapel, assisting. A reception will follow in Taliaferro Memorial Building.
