
Azell Oscar Aspinwall, also known as Buck,was born December 21, 1926 and passed away peacefully at his Jacksonville, Florida home on November 22, 2018 at the age of 91. He is survived by his loving wife, Merle, of 68 years; children Glenn and his wife Bonnie, Mark, Karen and her husband Glenn, Joe and his wife Tina; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. He was born at home in Patterson, Georgia on December 21,1926, to the late Oscar and Evie Aspinwall, one of seven children, and was preceded in death by his sisters Evelyn, Geraldine, and Nell. His surviving siblings are Gene, Jane and Sam (James Russell and wife Shirley). He Passed in his own home that he built 65 years ago. In 1944, Buck was a registered welder mechanic at the age of 17 with the International Brotherhood of Boiler Makers. Shortly after he joined, he left to become a veteran of the United States Coast Guard, Maritime Services as a Merchant Seaman, having been all around the world during World War II, as well as after the war, until the age of 23 in 1950. He then married Merle on September 1 of that year. On December 1, 1950, Buck became a Member of the International Association of Bridge Structural and Ornamental Iron Workers Local 597 until retirement at age 60. He helped to build Jacksonville including the Matthews bridge, the Southern Bell building, the Gulf Life tower and the Prudential building. After his retirement he continued to be a sought after advisor by many companies familiar with his extensive knowledge. He was a devoted husband and father and also enjoyed sheepshead fishing at the jetties beach and playing with his growing family at Strickland's landing. He also enjoyed traveling with Merle during retirement.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Hardage-Giddens Riverside Memorial Park, 7242 Normandy Boulevard.
