With hearts full of love and sadness, we announce the passing of Barbara Jeannette Quilon on August 29, 2025. She left this world just one month shy of her 81st birthday to be reunited with her husband of 54 years, Eduardo Asuelo Quilon, who preceded her in death on September 29, 2021.
Barbara was born on September 30, 1944, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to her parents, Maria Lina and Godofredo Quiachon. As the eldest of six siblings, Barbara embraced her role as the firstborn with strength, love, and a fierce sense of responsibility throughout her whole life.
At age 22, Barbara met and married, Eduardo. For the following 54 years they built their life together. Their home became a place of refuge for her siblings, their children and dear friends. They are survived by two daughters, Crisalina Johnson (Jeff) and Gloria Perez (Arthur), as well as two cherished grandchildren, Lillian and Travis, who she affectionately called her "Heart and Soul".
Barbara had the soul of a giver. Growing up with little, she found joy in giving to others. If you admired her ring, it was yours. If she saw a young family who appeared to be struggling, out came her wallet. She was especially famous for her $2 bills—always on hand to give to any child who crossed her path, whether at family gatherings or in a grocery store aisle. Even during her final hospital visit, she rolled around the ER waiting room handing out $2 bills.
A lover of all things bold, bright, and bedazzled, Barbara loved full color. Her style was unmistakable—three or more colorful layers, coordinated shoes and purses, flower-topped hats, and statement jewelry that could be seen a mile away. This earned her the title of "Queen of Colors" on social media in her later years, entertaining followers with her fashion style.
During her final chapter, as she navigated the challenges of widowhood and chronic illness, her devoted village that formed her support system, surrounded her with care. She was deeply loved, and would often express how blessed she was to have her support system despite voicing the frustrations of losing her eyesight, the changes in her life circumstances and the sense of loss of control.
Barbara’s legacy is one of embracing your individual uniqueness, unashamedly marching to the beat of your own drum, generosity, love and imaginative creativity. She will be truly missed but forever remembered in every splash of color, every act of kindness, and every sparkly jewel.
A private family celebration of her life will be held in her honor on September 11th.
