Charles E. Taylor, 87, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1937, he was a cherished member of a large family growing up as one of twelve children. This upbringing instilled in him the values of support and cooperation, which he carried throughout his life marked by service to family, friends and community.
In 1958, Charles proudly enlisted in the Air Force, the same year he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Quarles. Their partnership, lasting over four decades, was built on a foundation of integrity, respect, and a deep commitment to family and community service.
Following his military service, Charles dedicated his career to the industrial bakery industry, beginning at A&P Bakery. He later served as Vice President of the Bakery Division at Winn-Dixie and concluded his professional journey as a Senior Regional Sales Director with Flowers Industries.
Charles and Barbara built a loving family life that culminated on Fleming Island, where they thrived together until her passing in 2001. In 2003, he found love once more with Carol MacCurrach, marrying her three years later.
A humble man with a boy scout’s heart, Charles devoted his life to helping others, often stepping in without seeking recognition- whether providing financial assistance, aiding stranded boaters, or rescuing individuals from car accidents. He served as a volunteer firefighter for 15 years, organizing and leading the first volunteer fire department on Fleming Island, where he was the first chief for seven years. Additionally, he spent six years with the American Red Cross as part of the Disaster Assessment Team alongside Barbara. As an avid boater, Charles contributed his expertise to the Coast Guard Auxiliary for five years, serving as Vice-Admiral of the Jacksonville unit.
Charles's legacy is one of kindness, hard work, and unwavering support for family and community. He will be remembered not only for his accomplishments but also for the warmth and generosity he extended to everyone he encountered.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol; his daughter, Cheryl Taylor (Stephanie Sipp); his son, Chuck Taylor (Mary Carr); his granddaughter, Caitlin; his stepson, Allan MacCurrach (LeAnn Williamson); and his stepdaughter, Jennifer MacCurrach. He is also survived by numerous siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his beloved granddaughter, Savannah Taylor.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 6, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, located at 7801 Lone Star Rd., Jacksonville, Florida, with a reception to follow.
