Born to Stanley Lorne Cottrill, Sr. and Sally D. Cottrill in Lawrence, KS in 1947, David and his four siblings lived in several ports of call, including Trinidad & Tobago, following their Navy Chief father. They eventually settled in Jacksonville, where David graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1966.
He married his high school sweetheart, and love of his life, Mary Gretchen French in 1970, and they raised three children together before her passing in 2008.
David proudly served in the Navy himself, before spending 37 years working at Maxwell House in Jacksonville, retiring in 2004.
He had a knack for storytelling, a unique sense of humor and a willingness to help anyone who needed it. He loved hunting, camping, fishing and spending time with his family. After his retirement, David did more traveling, with his brothers to Costa Rica, Ecuador and Africa.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife; his son, Michael; and his brother, Stanley L. Cottrill, Jr.
David is survived by his daughters Christina DiMaio (Brian) and Kathleen Cottrill (Orrin Sellers); his sister, Margo Burke (Pat); his brothers Jack and Richard; his five grandchildren Emily, Aidan, Natalie, Declan and Julian; as well as nieces and nephews.
