Delmas Lanier White, 96, was born in Fitzgerald Georgia, April 16, 1928. The Following year the family moved to the southside of Jacksonville, Florida where he spend the rest of his life. Delmas joined the workforce at age 14 working in a bicycle shop full time helping his mother raise three younger siblings. Delmas learned early in life that work, love, and family was all about the same thing and was very important to him. Delmas always worked and loved family. Delmas later joined the Iron Workers Union where he spent a career erecting bridges and high rise buildings that make up Jacksonville’s landscape today. Delmas retired June 1, 1990 and spent the last 38 years of his life enjoying family, friends, and gardening. He was an excellent gardener.
Delmas’ iron worker career was interrupted from December 1, 1952, to October 30, 1954, when he joined his fellow Americans in the United States Army where he received the knowledge, skills, and training to defend, protect, and serve this great country he loved, the United States of America. He was later called upon to use these skills serving in Korea protecting and defending life and liberty for one year, three months and nine days. Thank you for Delmas for your service and “God bless America.” With his honorable discharge he received the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.
After his Honorable Discharge in 1954, he rejoined his Union Iron Worker brothers. Then he met the love of his life Ercel Myrtle Flint, lovingly referred to as “Midge.” In 1959, during their engagement, they joined forces to build their two story marital home where they raised her two teenage sons after getting married January 27, 1962.
Delmas accepted the Lord Jesus Christ late in life as his Lord and Savior and became the husband, father, friend, and leader God called him to be. He was a friend to many at Southside Assembly of God, and later Trinity Spring of Life Fellowship.
2 Corinthians 5:17 describes the life Delmas lived, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away; behold all things are become new.” Delmas was a man in Christ. He will truly be missed until we see him again in glory.
