

Atlantic Beach — Dorothy (Dot) McKinney Barker, 96, died January 27, 2025. A native of Macon,Georgia, she was born January 24, 1929, to the late Edward Respess McKinney and Mattie Lou Jackson McKinney.
Dot was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Donald (Don) Barker, and her siblings Juanita Reid, Mary Anne, Carlton, Ed, Billy and Eugene McKinney. She is survived by her son, Dr. Gary Barker (Dr. Sandra) of Winter Park, Florida, her daughter, Diane Barker Donnelly (Mark) of Columbia, South Carolina, granddaughters, Brittany Nicole Donnelly and Cydney McKinney Donnelly of Columbia, South Carolina, and a grandson, Grant Harrington Barker of Chicago, Illinois.
During the Korean War, Dot’s husband Don served in the US Army in Munich, Germany, where Dot joined him for fourteen months. As a 23-year-old, she traveled to Germany on the SS United States by herself! She and Don enjoyed traveling throughout Germany, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and
France. They returned to Europe in 1995 to re-visit the countries, as well as England. They both enjoyed
traveling during their marriage, visiting all the states except North and South Dakota!
Dot enjoyed her long-time membership at Selva Marina Country Club, now known as Atlantic Beach Country Club, where she played golf for 25 years and served as President of the Ladies Golf Association three times. Dot enjoyed the thrill of having a “Hole in One” on Hole #11 while playing with three dear friends. She also belonged to the Beaches Ladies Golf Association, where she enjoyed playing different
courses in the Jacksonville area and making many friends in the Association.
Dot was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Jacksonville Beach, joining the church with her husband and family in July 1959. She later had the pleasure of seeing both her son and daughter baptized in the church. Dot was very active in the Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a member of several church committees, through the years, including the Nominating Committee and Personnel Committee, serving as Chairperson several times.
Visitation will be from 11:00–12:00 at One Church of Jacksonville Beach (formally First Baptist Church of Jacksonville Beach), 324 N. Fifth St., Jacksonville Beach, Florida 32250, Funeral at 12:00 at One Church, followed by Reception. Private graveside services will be at Chapel Hills Memorial Gardens.
