

Edward Davis Hagan of Jacksonville, died on July 17th at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. Born in Morgantown, W.Va., on May 19, 1935, Mr. Hagan was the only child of the late Edward F. and Mary D. Hagan. He was educated in the public and parochial schools of Louisville, Ky., Nashville, Tenn., and Gilmer County, W.Va., before graduating from Kentucky Military Institute in 1953 and Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha social fraternity and Phi Eta Sigma academic honorary. He later was inducted into the Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi. While still a college student, Mr. Hagan assumed a full-time editorial position with the Associated Press, working out of the wire service’s Huntington and Charleston, W.Va., bureaus until 1965, when he resigned to become Assistant Executive Director of the West Virginia State Medical Association.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Hagan and his wife and children moved to Jacksonville in 1970, when he was appointed Director of Communications for the Florida Medical Association. During the next 27 years, he served the FMA in various positions. As executive Editor of The Journal of the Florida Medical Association, he was an active member of the Florida Magazine Association, which he served as President during 1979-80. Mr. Hagan retired in 1997 after the FMA moved its headquarters to Tallahassee.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Phyllis W. Hagan. Among other survivors are his son Phillip Jeffrey Hagan of Roswell, GA.; his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer L. and Donald L. Martin of Rockwall, TX; grandchildren Dylan and Avery Martin of Rockwall; several cousins and in-laws; and his feline pal., Sylvester.
Visitation will be held on Thursday July 21, 2016 from 6-8PM, at Hardage-Giddens Town & Country Funeral Home. At the request of the deceased, there will be no funeral or memorial service and burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Jacksonville Humane Society for the care and placements of homeless dogs and cats.
