

Edwin D. “Ed” Joyner, son of the late Jesse W. and Grace E. Joyner, passed away peacefully on September 26th at the San Jose Rehabilitation and Nursing home in Jacksonville, FL, at the age of 93. Born in Jacksonville in 1919, Ed lived a full and active life. In his early teens he shipped on the last six- mast schooner to sail out of Jacksonville and served in the Merchant Marine for some 35 years, including active duty during WWII. He worked an additional 25 years as a master carpenter for the City of Jacksonville, finally retiring at the age of 75. He was a distinctive character with an independent mind and a keen wit, well read on a variety of subjects. He enjoyed fishing and visiting with his many friends and kin where reminiscences of shipping around the world and the misdeeds of politicians were favorite topics. Mr. Joyner was preceded in death by 5 sisters and 2 brothers and by his beloved wife Flora Mae (Bobbie). He is survived by his youngest sister Frances Casale and her children Gerard, Lisa, and Daniel D. Casale; by grand-nieces Anna Herbert, Robin Lahert, and Susan Christian, grand-nephew Edward Leak, and their families. He also remained close to his late wife’s family (Winners, Hughes, Wiggins, Fountains, Hardys and others) and was a frequent guest at their boating and holiday gatherings in Florida and the Carolinas. In lieu of flowers, well-wishers are asked to send a donation to the Children’s Home Society of Jacksonville, 3027 San Diego Road, Jacksonville, FL 32207. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Hardage-Giddens Town and Country Funeral Home located at 7242 Normandy Blvd., Jax. FL 32205. The funeral will take place on Monday, October 1, 2012. Visitation will be held from 10-11 am and funeral service at 11, followed by burial ceremony at Riverside Cemetery and a light reception afterward.
