Our hearts full of sorrow and with deep gratitude, we announce the passing of Dr. Eleanor Belle Callon on June 9, 2025 in Nordfjordeid, Norway. A woman of great faith, wisdom, and compassion, Eleanor was a faithful member of the Episcopal Church, a devoted Daughter of the King, a retired professor and clinical psychologist. Her life was a tapestry of service—to her faith, her family, her profession and the community.
Eleanor was born in Marianna, Florida on November 3, 1936. She lived much of her adult life in Atlanta, Georgia and Baton Rouge Louisiana, before returning to Florida to retire in Ormond Beach, Florida. Eleanor loved Volusia County and had multi-generational roots in the area. As a longtime member of St. James Episcopal Church, she lived her faith, offering herself in service and prayer, grounded always in the enduring promises of Christ. She served in many roles at St. James, including as a Lay Eucharist Volunteer and as a member of the Vestry. A faithful Daughter of the King, she embodied the Order’s sacred vows of prayer, service, and evangelism, living by its guiding motto: "For His Sake... I am but one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something."
Eleanor had a hunger for knowledge and learning. She earned doctorates from the University of Florida and Louisiana State University. Her professional life was one of deep vocation. Eleanor nurtured minds and tended souls. She had a gift for listening—not just with her ears, but also with her heart. She helped others discover their worth, confront their struggles, and move toward healing and growth.
In addition to her professional and spiritual callings, Eleanor was a passionate advocate for the arts and community service. As past president of the Baton Rouge Symphony League, she supported music education, fostered young talent, and helped bring the beauty of the symphony to the broader community. After moving back to Florida, she was active in the Daytona Beach Symphony Guild. She continued her unwavering support for the community through the Lions Club, served as the chapter president and spearheaded numerous programs that made positive differences. Eleanor was a loyal member of Daughters of the American Revolution. She also served on the Halifax Hospital Foundation Board and was a member of the Cherry Laurel Garden Club.
A lifelong explorer at heart, Eleanor had a deep love for travel. Whether journeying abroad or discovering hidden gems close to home, she delighted in new cultures, natural wonders, and the richness of God’s creation. Her travels were more than leisure—they were immersive experiences that deepened her appreciation of humanity and broadened her already generous heart.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her loving mother, Annie Belle McClellan Callon, her devoted father, Richard Moran Callon, her cherished brothers Richard McClellan Callon (Imogene), Howard Grayson Callon, Sr. (Phoebe) and her dear sister Margaret Ann Callon Lyon. She was also preceded in death by her niece Judy Ann Callon Kuhns and her nephew Michael Callon Lyon. She is survived by niece Margaret Jeannine Callon Jones (Patrick), nephews Richard Milton Lyon, Jr., Howard Grayson Callon, Jr. (Sherrie) and niece-in-law Martha Lynn Lyon. Eleanor is also survived by numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews, who give thanks for the incredible loving legacy she leaves behind. Her life was a testament to the power of faith in action—a steady light always. She provided wise and loving counsel to all who sought her help.
A celebration of her amazing life was held at St. James Episcopal Church in Ormond Beach, Florida on Monday, July 14, 2025. Eleanor will be laid to rest beside her mother and father in a graveside ceremony at Riverside Memorial Park in Jacksonville, Florida on Tuesday July 22, 2025, with Father Ernie Bennett leading.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the St. James Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, 44 S Halifax Dr, Ormond Beach, FL 32176, continuing the legacy of a woman who lived with grace, gave with joy, and loved without condition.
May she rest in peace and rise in glory.
