Evelyn Alberta Miller Thompson, also known as E.T. – Eewie - Mama – Mom – Mother – Meemaw – Aunt Udda –Aunt Evelyn - Evelyn and Baby Darlin’; who lived 88 years, 4 months and 4 days in Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on Tuesday, May 23rd, 2016 at 6:15 PM, due to injuries sustained from a traumatic fall.
Evelyn was born in Macon, Georgia; located in Bibb County, and moved to Jacksonville, FL at the age of one-year old. She attended Andrew Jackson High School.
Evelyn married Richard D. Thompson, Jr. (also known as R.D.) on August 22, 1947 at the Beaver Street Baptist Church. They have been married for 68 years, 9 months.
Evelyn worked as a clerk for the Atlantic National Bank for 10 years before dedicating herself full-time to her family. She was actively involved in the only church she ever attended, the Beaver Street Baptist Church, which later became known as the Jacksonville Baptist Temple and now, First Coast Baptist Church. She was a faithful member who began teaching Sunday School at the age of 16 and continued teaching for almost 70 years. She also sang in a trio with her two sisters in the early days of the church and sang alto in the church choir for 65 plus years. When R.D. retired in 1990, she volunteered her services at the church. She served as an office assistant five days a week for 21 years until her health failed. She was a proven prayer warrior and a gentle, persuasive witness for her Lord. When she asked for the rain to be deterred so her freshly washed clothes wouldn’t get wet on the clothes line…that prayer was answered. When you asked her to pray for a situation in your life…she prayed. She prayed about everything…everything. The big things – the little things and all those other things in between. Faithful, quiet, constant prayer warrior.
Evelyn is survived by her husband and best friend, R.D.; two children, Dianne and Darrell; three grandchildren, Richie Briggs (wife Sheryl), Aaron and Megan Thompson; two great grandchildren, Ashlee and Josh Briggs; granddaughter and great granddaughters who were blended into and loved into her family, Ashley Par-Due, Abigail and Ashlynne Zimmerman. She also left behind one brother, Richard (wife Dianne); one niece, Wanda Durocher (husband Mark) and her children, Shannon (husband Jeremy) and Ross; nephews Marion Stephens and Dale Miller; numerous nieces and nephews from both sides of her family as well as sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law she loved and other family and friends.
