Gayle was born in Norfolk, Virginia, and moved with her family to Jacksonville, Florida, at a young age. She was confirmed at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, attended Bishop Kenny High School briefly, and graduated from Lee High School. Gayle built a long and dedicated career as a manager with BellSouth and AT&T in downtown Jacksonville. She was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Green Cove Springs (GCS) and Fleming Island.
She was predeceased by her son, Steven Newman (1993), her husband, Lewis “Bill” Newman (2013), her parents, Marguerite Stephanz and Albert Read Wescott Jr., and her nephew, Marshall A. Gibbs III. Gayle is survived by her daughter, Marguerite “Marlee” Logan of Clay County, her beloved grandson, Daniel Logan, her sisters, Terri Bowler and Sharon Gibbs of Jacksonville Beach, her brother, Read Wescott of Tallahassee, many nieces, nephews, and extended family members, as well as her cherished four-legged companions, Colin and Bandit.
In recent years, Gayle was her daughter’s gardening partner—planting, pruning, and laughing through countless projects together. Though she is no longer physically present, her love of the outdoors will live on in every bloom, bird, and ray of sunshine that graces the yard she so enjoyed.
As per her wishes, no formal services will be held. The family will gather for a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Moffitt Cancer Center, 12902 USF Magnolia Drive, Tampa, FL 33612, in honor of her son, Steven E. Newman, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
