Lucille Herrington Kirkland (Lucy) was born into this world January 23,1926 in Fort Meade, Florida and passed peacefully away August 12, 2024 in Jacksonville, Florida. Lucy was the third daughter of four to her parents James Charlton Herrington and Ida Holton. Lucy believed in God and was a Christian.
At a very young age Lucy moved with her family to Jacksonville, Florida and resided there the rest of her life. She attended local schools and met her handsome husband, Royce, at the beginning of WWII. Lucy’s mother ran a successful boarding house and it was there that Lucy was given her nickname by one of the cooks. She would constantly say,”Miss Lucille, you are so beautiful, you look just like a movin star!”. Of course, she was lovely and stayed that way her entire life.
On February 19, 1941 this “Movin Star” married Royce Kirkland. Royce, his four brothers and sisters lost their parents in a fatal car accident, which gave the newlyweds an instant family. Lucy and Royce later had two daughters of their own, Carolyn and Karen. At a very young age Lucy showed her love and determination to guide all the children to be responsible, dependable adults. Her many sacrifices to see that the children had what they needed was a testament to her love.
Lucy was a perfectionist in all things. She worked outside the home and was a homemaker, belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, and was a member of the Jacksonville Women’s Business Club. She acted as Room Mother in the schools her children attended and was always available to drive a car load of her daughters’ friends to the Lee High School Football games. She was a talented seamstress, had a brown belt in judo, was an avid gardener, fabulous Southern cook, gifted singer and guitar player, and a huge gator fan! Lucy loved to travel and enjoyed Europe, the Caribbean, and of course the United States.
Lucy was pre-deceased by the love of her life, Royce Kirkland, husband of sixty-nine years, and Carolyn Kirkland Webb, beloved daughter. Sisters, Gladys Herrington Long and Louise Herrington Brown, brother-in law’s Marion Kirkland, Herbert L. Kirkland, William Guy Kirkland, Earl Sneed and sister-in-law Rita Kirkland. Lucy is survived by her loving youngest daughter, Karen Kirkland Franklin, precious grandchildren that she adored, Heather Kenyon Oakley (Chris), Jaye Kenyon (Rhonda), Julia Webb Sullivan (Chris), and Kirkland Turner Franklin (Austin). Sister, Gracie L. Kirkland and sister-in-law Margaret Kirkland Sneed, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Loving care and assistance was given to Lucy in the last 8 years of her life by her dedicated grandson Kirkland, daughter Karen, and caregiver Marilyn.
The “Movin Star” was our dear wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. Shine on Lucy! We love you!
A graveside service for Lucille will be held Saturday, August 17, 2024 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at Riverside Memorial Park, 7242 Normandy Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32205.
