

Marguerite was born in Micanopy Florida on June 11,1923. Daughter of Collie Daniel Sherouse and Bertha Smith Sherouse, she grew up in Micanopy and graduated from P. K. Yonge Laboratory school. After graduation she moved to Jacksonville to attend business school and met Henry Motes. They were married on the 21st of March,1942. They shared a life together for the next 68 years. They raised three children, Candy, Kent and Mindy who all still reside in Jacksonville.
Marguerite had a passion for cooking and baking, She was known for her delicious desserts. Her talents did not stop there, she also loved gardening, sewing and needlepointing. She created a beautiful split level garden in the backyard of the three story home they built on the St. Johns River. Her favorite room in the house was her sewing room where she escaped to create beautiful clothes for herself and her family. She even made sports coats, neckties and needlepointed vests for Henry, which he proudly wore.
Marguerite dedicated time to her church and volunteer work. She volunteered her services for God and her community in various capacities over the years. Her volunteer work included an active involvement in the Salvation Army where she worked on their yearly Celebrity Chefs Luncheon. She was president of her Garden Circle, president of Inner Wheel, a deaconess at Riverside Baptist Church and a Paul Harris Fellow award recipient. Marguerite and Henry were also members of Timuquana Country Club where she played golf with the 9 hole group and was a member of the monthly Honeybees Luncheon Group.
Marguerite was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She never forgot a birthday. She attended every game, performance, award, graduation and made each one of her family members and friends feel loved and respected.
She was preceded in death by her husband Henry and her son Mark. She is survived by her three children, Candy Clark, Kent Motes, Mindy Harwood, (Jim) and grandchildren, Chad Hart (Erin), Catie Lott (Denny), Jim Harwood (Brenda), William Harwood, Kate Schmidt (Robbie), Kent Motes,Jr. (Casey), Alex Motes (Summer), Katrina Motes and Randy Motes and 9 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Norma Basford (Hayes), and brother Byron Sherouse (Betty Jane).
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, April 21, 2023 at Riverside Baptist Church, 2650 Park St, Jacksonville, FL 32204.
The family request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Salvation Army.
