Mary Alice Leverett McCray, age 90, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away on Friday, May 10, 2024. Mary was born on June 27, 1933 in Brantley County, GA and was raised in Waycross, GA. She was the daughter of James Fredrick and Maggie Westberry Leverett. Mary married her husband, Alton Lavern McCray on September 9, 1950 in Ware County, GA. Alton passed away on August 4, 2012.
Mary was a member of Sovereign Grace Family Church, and sang in the church choir when she first started attending the church. During the course of her careers, she worked as a beautician, worked at King Edward Cigar Factory in Waycross, Sears catalog, and was the secretary of Southern Diesel Service, which together with her husband they started the business together. Mary had many hobbies including working in her yard (loved raking leaves and planting flowers), quilting, ceramics, oil painting and gave classes on painting, and she dearly loved Christmas and always enjoyed decorating her home and yard for the holiday.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, James Fredrick and Maggie Westberry Leverett; her husband, Alton Lavern McCray; and siblings Richard Leverett (sister-in-law Ann), Larry Leverett (sister-in-law Rhonda), Gladys Strickland, and Doris Smith; and one sister-in-law Gloria Leverett. She is survived by her two daughters Karen Lavern Faircloth (Wilson Faircloth, Jr.) and Macy Darleen Herbertson (Teddy Herbertson); five grandchildren Angel Bryan (Eric), Amy Faircloth (Brian Taylor), Tracie Herbertson, Stacey Bellar (Derek), and Joseph Herbertson (Eileen); six great-grandchildren Josh Kelly, Kristen Entrekin, Brooke Hutcheson (Hunter), Logan Douglas, Morgan Herbertson, and Reagan McLeish; one brother, James Leverett; brothers-in-law Jerry Strickland and Charlie Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Mary will be held Thursday, May 16, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205. A funeral service will occur Thursday, May 16, 2024 at 12:00 PM following the visitation at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.
