Doug went to his eternal home with Jesus on July 16, 2022. He was born in Charleston, SC on January 13, 1942, to Ralph Harold Guthrie and Willie Grace Miller Guthrie. He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Janice Guthrie. He is survived by his loving wife Betty, his daughters Alicia and Shelley Guthrie, a granddaughter Flora Guthrie, and son Robert Drysdale.
Doug grew up attending elementary and high school in Athens, TN. Doug received a BS degree at Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN and a Master of Arts at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. Lipscomb University is where Doug met his wife, Betty. They married on July 1, 1966, and moved to Jacksonville, FL, where he lived for the remainder of his life. He taught physical education for 33 years in Jacksonville, FL at Kirby Smith, Oceanway, and Highlands Junior High. He was known as 'Coach Guthrie' to the many students he taught/coached in baseball and football.
Doug was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed baseball, football, hockey, golf, and NASCAR. During his 24 years of retirement, he enjoyed encouraging people who needed it, reading, exercising, doing 'honey-do jobs' at home, and staying active. Doug and Betty enjoyed several wonderful travel excursions around the world together. He was an active member of Argyle Church of Christ and served as an elder in previous years at Riverside Park, Mandarin, and Argyle Churches of Christ. Throughout his life, Doug was a very generous Christian man, offering his time, money, and resources to bless others. He will be greatly missed by his family and those who love him because of his strength, integrity, faith, guidance, and loving support. Special thanks to Community Hospice and the caring nurses there.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Eastern European Missions (EEM) to supply Bibles to those who need them, or to Community Hospice.
