Robert Wayne Mathis, age 81, passed away on December 1, 2025. He was born in Jacksonville, FL on August 20, 1944, to Joseph Mathis and Elisse Anderson Matthis. After graduating from Baldwin High School, he served in the United States Army and was deployed to Vietnam in 1970. He was awarded the National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Service medal, Army Commendation medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal w/60 Device Sharpshooter badge (M-14 Rifle), Expert badge (M-16 Rifle), Good Conduct medal and Vietnamese Training medal.
Robert worked at NAPA Auto Parts for 33 years, was in the National Guard Army, and belonged to the Gateway Rifle and Pistol Club for 20 years. He was a gun collector, loading and filling his own ammunition with machinery, maintained his 1992 Camero, worked in his yard and was also a member of NRA.
He is survived by daughters, Sherie Ergas and Amy Green; son, Robert Wayne Mathis, II; two grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Preceded in death by this parents, Joseph Mathis and Elsie Tyre Mathis and brother, Charlie Hobbs.
An inurnment service will be held at a later date at the Jacksonville National Cemetery.
