

Robert Sherman Williams, 90, passed away following a lengthy illness, Monday, July 17, 2017, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born October 8, 1926, to Roy and Reva Williams of Olathe, Kansas. Robert was an avid Florida Gators football fan; he also enjoyed hunting, fishing, travel and spending time with his devoted family. After growing up on a small farm, and in 1944 at the end of World War II, Robert joined the Navy at age 17, serving on the USS Montauk. His parents’ permission was required so that he could pursue a life of military service. After the war ended, he returned to Kansas, and in 1957 was transferred by the Navy to Jacksonville, Florida, where he resided for the remainder of his life. Following 23 years of active duty, Robert retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1967 as a BMCS. He was then employed by Civil Service until he retired in 1988. He is preceded in death by his daughter Vickie Lynn, his sister Joyce and his brother Loren. Robert is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Kathryn, two sons Steve Williams, Chris (Stella) Williams, and grandchildren Sarah, Kristen and Lauren. Hardage-Giddens Riverside Memorial Park and Funeral Home is serving the family. A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 20, 2017, from 5:00-7:00pm at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 8523 Normandy Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida 32221. The funeral mass, officiated by Father Tim Lozier, will be held on Friday, July 21, 2017, at 11:00am at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Mr. Williams will be laid to rest on Monday, July 24, 2017, at 11:00am at the Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32218. He will receive full military honors for his service to his country.
