Susan J. Serokee was reunited in Heaven with her beloved husband, Stephen Serokee, on February 11, 2024. Sue was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania. She married Steve in Rhode Island, where he was stationed in the Navy. She became a mother of her devoted two children in Norfolk Virginia, learned to cook international foods in California, served the Navy and her community in Patuxent River, Maryland, then settled in Jacksonville in 1974 where Steve retired from the US Navy. In 1995, Sue and Steve built their dream home on a beautiful private lake in Fleming Island, Florida.
Sue’s life was one of commitment to her family, faith and service to others. In 1973 she was awarded Navy Wife of the Year recognizing her service as a Red Cross Volunteer nurse, Navy Relief worker, Girl Scout parent and in the PTA at her children’s elementary school. Devoted to her children, she was the “mom taxi” for piano lessons, baseball, football and cheerleading. She made sure Barbie and Stevie had the opportunities to pursue their dreams. Aside from her own children, Sue was instrumental in the lives of many other children who adored her.
Sue loved her home. She loved nature and trees and watching the ducks on her lake.
Sue was also a wonderfully gifted artist and loved to paint nature scenes. She was an avid animal lover and donated regularly to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, gorillas in Africa and the Humane Society. Sue cared deeply for the less fortunate and contributed to Food for the Poor and the City Rescue mission.
Sue was a dedicated parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fleming Island. She was a Past President of the Ladies Guild (n/k/a Council of Catholic Women) and held several different offices over the years. She loved her church and cherished her many friends there.
Sue is survived by her daughter Barbara Serokee Williams (David), son Stephen J. Serokee (Amy), Granddaughter Avery L. Serokee, siblings Edward H. Williams, Jr., Patricia Raydo (Robert), Barbara Lamb (Charles), Mary Janet Williams, Elizabeth Biechler (Michael), and numerous extended family, nieces and nephews.
As a tribute to Sue’s commitment to her life of service, those wishing to honor her memory may contribute to Sacred Heart Council of Catholic Women, Attn: Lilli Moniot, 7190 Hwy. 17 South, Fleming Island, FL 32003. Her children express their deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love and prayers for their Mom.
The family will have a private burial on February 20, 2024 at 9 am at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery with services entrusted by Hardage-Giddens Riverside Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd. Jacksonville, FL 32205. Followed by a memorial mass that is open to all at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 11:00 am, located at 7109 Hwy. 17 South, Fleming Island, Florida, 32003 with a reception to follow at the church.
