

Walter Ray Schirbock, 86, slipped away quietly early Thursday morning of January 18th. He was born July 4, 1931, in Jacksonville, FL. After graduating from the Jacksonville School of Technology in 1948, Walter enlisted and served with honor in the United States Air Force during the Korean War from 1948 to 1952. While stationed in Misawa Japan, he was assigned to Flight “C” 3rd Air Rescue Squadron. While there, he received the Occupation (Japan), Air, Korean Service Medals and the Distinguished Unit Citation. After serving, Walter returned to Jacksonville as a draftsman for American Coolair. In 1956 he was introduced to the love of his life, Shirley Taylor, by a mutual friend and later married in June of 1957. In the late 1960s, he joined Exact, Inc. as a draftsman and subsequently worked as a Quality Control Technician until his retirement on July 23, 1993. Walter was a loving and devoted husband of sixty years, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed visiting Disney World, going on family vacations and spending time at the family lake house in Keystone Heights, Florida. Many knew him to be a kind and giving individual. Walter is preceded in death by his parents Walter Richard and Sarah Ethel, sister Evelyn Yvonne, wife and soul-mate Shirley. He is survived by his son, Michael R.; daughter, Debra S.; his 2 grandsons Brian M., Christopher A., granddaughter Rachel M Beville, great-granddaughters Kensie N. & Brynn A. and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. J.M. Garmendia, Dr. Kevin Hunger, and the staff of Cancer Specialists of North Florida and Community Hospice for the tireless efforts attending to the needs of our loved one. Hardage-Giddens Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home is serving the family. A visitation for friends will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 from 6pm-8pm. Funeral services to be held at St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church, 4758 Shelby Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32210 on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 2pm with interment at Riverside Memorial Park.
