Bernie was born and raised in Indiana County, Pennsylvania with his three brothers and one sister. He played football and basketball. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army as a Platoon Sergeant with the Seventh Division and as an Operations Sergeant in the 32nd Battalion during the Korean War. After his Army discharge in 1953, Bernie married and raised two daughters. He had a successful career with the Ford Motor Company as a general foreman for over 35 years.
Bernie was an avid sports fan and loved watching football and Detroit Tigers baseball. He also loved all types of music: he always played music and/or sports in his house. He also enjoyed traveling, fishing, and gardening.
Bernie is survived by his brother, Joseph (Joe); daughters, Mary (Joseph Betten) and Catherine; and his former wife, Joanne. He was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Mary; brothers, William and Jack; sister, Delores; and his long time significant other, Betty Trefsgar.
No memorial service is planned at this time. If you wish to consider a memorial donation, one of Bernie's favorite charities was the Cure Alzheimer's Fund (https://curealz.org/). He had a strong connection to Alzheimer's disease in his later years and was keenly interested in improving treatments and finding a cure.
