Louis was at the top of the ranks of best friends I have had in this life. I was an MBA at Michigan when he was finishing up his PhD. We were reintroduced  by a mutual friend about thirty years ago. We had lunch together at least once or twice a month, and had Roxanne & Nora join us for jazz & classical events. No doubt partly to do with his studies & teaching, he was the kind of guy you could give him a topic or ask a question and he would more or less rattle on for an hour or two as long as the food was good.

Dr. Louis Petro was a superior accountant and a fine colleague at Wayne State University's Mike Ilitch School of Business. He bought both warmth and rigor to his professorial teaching. Generations of Michigan's practicing accountants benefited from his many talents. William H. Volz Distinguished Service Professor

I am very saddened to hear of Lou's unexpected passing. Lou taught several Accounting courses over the years at Eastern Michigan University, where I am an Accounting faculty member. I always enjoyed our conversations and hearing Lou's interesting insights on a variety of topics. He was always friendly and had a smile on his face, coming across as a very genuine and down-to-earth individual even though you understood his extreme intelligence. I still laugh to this day that on his exam 'keys' he would write the name 'Shoeless Joe Jackson' instead of writing 'Key' or his own name. Whenever I would see him, he would joke with me how Shoeless Joe was still acing his exams! God bless, Lou --- you had a positive impact on many and will be greatly missed.

Lou was one of the nicest and smartest men that I ever knew.

He was simply brilliant, winning the Paton Award for scoring the highest score on the CPA Exam of the many of thousands of other Michigan CPA candidates in the early 1960s, and earning a PhD from U of M.

He worked very hard as an engineer, professor,  administrator consultant and in so many other ways.

He also was a "regular" guy, whom we all would love to have a coffee or beer with.

I wish Roxanne and Lou's entire family my deepest condolences.

A man amongst men; a slave to Jesus Christ; a mentor; a friend... and so much more to so many people.  You are deeply missed and will ALWAYS be remembered.  Love you, Lou!

I used to love talking with Lou about anything and everything before Mass at St. Benedicts, where we were EM's and lectors.  He was a very friendly man and lived a fascinating life.  I will miss him very much.

It was a privilege working with Lou at LIT and was an excellent Dean.  Worked with him on numerous projects and was one of the most intelligent and hardworking man I ever met.

Lou taught a course in Fraud Accounting for us at Hillsdale College every Spring semester.  As department chair I had many opportunities to talk with him and see him in action.  He was smart, knowledgeable, gregarious, and funny.  The students loved his course, and I loved talking with him.  What a great man!  I’m very sad about his passing.  We will miss him.

I was shocked to hear of Lou’s accident and death. Lou was one of my accounting professors in grad school at the University of Detroit in the mid 70’s when I was working on my MBA.  I was always amazed at his intelligence and teaching skills. He definitely had an influence on me as I also then  taught accounting and finance at Walsh college and Oakland community colleges. He was one of those rare people that have a tremendous impact on your life. RIP. My condolences to his family.

I am so deeply saddened by this tragic news.  Dr. Petro stopped by my office every Thursday morning during spring semesters and always asked me "Is anything exciting going on?"  He would stay to chat a little on those days about faith and family, politics etc. He will be greatly missed here at Hillsdale College.  My  sincere condolences to his family.  May God comfort you.
