Betty Jane Carter-Chambliss went to be with the Lord on November 22, 2025, after a brief stay at Northwest Hospital in Amarillo, Texas, at the age of 88. She was born on February 26, 1937, in Cooper, Texas, to Fred A. and Dorothy Mae Hunt.
Betty lived a nomadic life, moving from place to place. As a young girl, she lived in Cooper and Mt. Vernon, Texas. Later, her stepfather, Cecil J. Hunt (a Driller), moved the family to Provo, Utah, along with stops in Snyder, Midland, and Monahans, Texas. She graduated from Monahans High School in 1955.
She married Joe B. Carter on June 3, 1955. Joe joined the United States Air Force and spent the next 20 years at many duty stations. In 1975, they moved to Midland and, six years later, to Harker Heights, Texas. After Joe died in 2007, she moved to Andrews and married Sam Curtis Chambliss in 2010. They spent time in Ruidoso, NM, and Andrews, TX.
Betty was devoted to her family and friends and loved them very much. She was known for her sense of humor, teasing, sage advice, and her giving heart. She was an ardent reader and dog lover. Most importantly, she was a devoted Christian.
Betty was preceded in death by her husbands, Joe B. Carter and Sam Chambliss; her brother, Billy Hunt; and her eldest son, Steven Wayne Carter. She is survived by her sister, Linda Martin, of Arlington; sons Stanley/Laura Carter of Andrews and Stuart/Sharon Carter of Lubbock; 9 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, December 1st, at Means Methodist Church, 201 NE Ave B, in Andrews, Texas.
Graveside service will be held Tuesday, December 9th, 11:00 AM at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen. 11463 Fort Hood Street, Killeen, Texas 76542.
