David D. Ellis

David Dewayne Ellis was born in Itasca, Texas on April 28, 1929, to Alberta Payne Ellis and Henry Ellis and was the youngest of five children. He was the father of three children Peggy Holmes, David Ellis, Jr. (Alisha) and Alberta Peek. He has 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He joined the army on December 4, 1948, and was honorably discharged on April 1, 1969, after spending 20 years, 3 months, and 21 days in service. During his tenure, he earned the rank of Sergeant E-5. David was one of the few who helped integrate into the army and was subjected to very harsh times as he moved up the ranks.

When he retired from the army, he took a job on the base of Fort Cavazos, formerly known as Fort Hood in Killeen and lived in Copperas Cove for more than 30 years. David had a passion for repairing everything, reading, gardening, barbequing, riding his bike and walking to nearby stores and the post office.

Visitation for David will be held Monday, April 28, 2025, from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home, 1615 South Fort Hood Road, Killeen, TX 76542-1654. Following the visitation, will be a committal service at 3:00 PM at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 11463 TX-195, Killeen, TX 76542.
