Our hearts are heavy with sadness at the passing of John David Lackmeyer on Friday, June 24, 2011, at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas, surrounded by his family. John was born on May 30, 1971, in Waco, Texas to Suzy (Davidson) Lackmeyer and Mike Lackmeyer. He was the grandson of the late John B. (“Old Chap”) and Margaret (“Nanny”) Davidson of Waco, Texas.
John was our “Gentle Giant” full of grace and love. He taught us all perseverance, tolerance, kindness, and unconditional love for everyone. He had a beautiful spirit of acceptance and had mastered living life for all it was worth. He never failed to end a conversation by telling us he loved us and reminding us to tell the other members of our family that he loved them too.
He loved going to the movies, playing video games, and making homemade crafts. He was an avid participant in Special Olympics, never failing to bring home medals and ribbons, which he proudly displayed. He also loved to eat, especially triple servings of Nanny’s homemade dressing and chocolate chip cookies. When taking John out to eat, it was always a good idea to choose the All You Can Eat buffets. When he needed some money, he would always ask, “Can I borrow fifty bucks?” To him, everything cost “fifty bucks”.
He was always up for going anywhere with family and friends, wherever they might be going. Summer trips to the beach were especially important. He always rested his hand on his Mom’s shoulder as they walked, and greeted his parents with four “Three cheers for Mom and Dad. Hip, hip, hooray!” Holidays with his family were most important to John, with Christmas being one of his favorites. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and would entertain the family with his wisdom, honesty and genuine affection.
John loved living in his “apartment” at Rockhouse in Georgetown, Texas, and missed his friends there. He was eager to get back to see them and to have them visit him when he was not able to travel. A special bed there was built, to accommodate his height, by his grandfather.
John was predeceased by his grandparents and is survived by his parents; his brother Jeff and wife Shannon Lackmeyer, and daughters Jenna and Ellee; his brother Jay Lackmeyer, and daughter Hannah; and his sister Bonny Kuerner and husband Ron , and daughter Abbey.
If a family has a soul, a decent, loving, genuine soul at its very core, then John was ours. Heaven is a more blessed place, and there is no one more deserving of peace, but his absence leaves an enormous void in our family. We will treasure our memories.
Memorial service will take place Monday at 4pm at Crawford and Bowers Funeral Home, Killeen, Texas.
A Celebration of Life will follow at the Lackmeyer’s home, 9301 Troll Hollow, Belton, Texas.
