Johnnie Mae Moore Hill was born January 7, 1935, in Thomson, Georgia to the late Minnie Lee Moore. Johnnie passed away May 9, 2025, in Harker Heights, Texas at the age of 90 years. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Johnnie grew up in Thomson, Georgia and spent her youth in McDuffie County. She married Joshua Hill, Sr. on May 24, 1952, and raised her children in Thomson until Joshua joined the military. As a young military wife, she moved with her husband and seven children to assignments in Ft. Dix, New Jersey, Ft. Carson, Colorado, Ft. Riley, Kansas, Ft. Bliss, El Paso, Texas and Giessen, Germany. Her challenge was raising her children on her own in Salina, Kansas while Joshua was in Vietnam. Never an easy task, but the support of a military wife is critical. As her children grew up, she would help other military families by babysitting their precious children. Providing a vital service and a loving home to the military community.
Johnnie did not especially like her middle name. Several of her great grandchildren would facetime her and say, “Good Morning, Johnnie Mae.” They would then giggle. Johnnie was always tickled.
Johnnie will be joining her loving husband, Joshua Hill, Sr., three of her sons, Marion, Joshua Jr. and Kevin and her beloved grandson, Spencer Hill, Jr. in heaven.
Johnnie Hill is survived by her loving children, LTC (Ret.) Joseph Gregory Hill (Pat) in Pittsville, VA, Spencer Hill (Angela) in Allen, Texas, Mark Hill (Jackie) in Killeen, Texas and Cynthia Matthews (Emerson) in Austin, Texas. Her grandchildren, Izaak Hill (Maricar) in Clifton, VA, Larissa Hill (Matt) in Chapel Hill, NC, Ebony White (Lamont) in Killeen, Texas, Gabrielle Hill in Austin, Texas, Janay James (Asa) in Killeen, Texas, Jaleesa James, Austin, Texas, Preston Hill, Dallas, Texas and Parker Hill, Allen, Texas, and Chris Matthews (Susan) Wichita, Kansas. She was blessed with 12 great grandchildren. The love she gave to all of her family will be greatly missed.
A funeral service for Johnnie will be held Friday, May 23, 2025 at 12:00 PM at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home, 1615 South Fort Hood Road, Killeen, TX 765421654. Following the funeral service will be a committal service at 2:00 PM at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 11463 TX-195, Killeen, TX 76542.
