We are saddened to share that our beloved mother and grandmother, Sandy Ferril, passed away on March 7, 2025, at the age of 79, due to pneumonia. Her family was by her side as she passed peacefully in her sleep.
Sandy was born on May 28, 1945, in Lubbock, Texas, to Jack Stanley and Mary Puleo Tarkenton. As a child, she moved frequently as her father sought new opportunities, living throughout Texas, Arizona, and Colorado. It was in Springfield, Colorado where she met Eddie, the love of her life.
Their story began at a party while Eddie was home from college for the weekend. Sandy may have arrived with someone else, but she left with Eddie. When he offered to drive her home that night, he had no idea he’d be driving her home for the rest of their lives (or so he often said). They married on March 28, 1964, in Springfield and spent more than 55 years together.
Sandy’s career was shaped by her passion for helping others feel at home. After years as a dedicated military wife and mother, she pursued real estate, earning both her Real Estate license and later her broker’s license. She quickly became one of Killeen’s top agents, known for her warmth and dedication to newcomers in the community. In 1986, she joined Tri-City Property Management, the business she and Eddie built together, where she worked until retiring in 2010. As she once said, “I realized it was helping newcomers to the area that I really enjoyed. I could not have found a better life choice.”
In the last year of her life, Sandy moved to Austin to be closer to her daughter, settling into the Enclave, a senior living community where she attended stretch classes, brain boosters, and made many new friends. Whether it was from years of moving as a child or simply part of her nature, she had a way of making people feel welcome—always greeting others with a warm smile that lit up every room she entered.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Mary Tarkenton; her brother, Jack Tarkenton; and her husband, Wilburn “Eddie” Ferril. She is survived by her sister, Tina Howard and her husband Delbert, her sister-in-law Sherilyn Owen; her daughters, Kay Sandoval and her husband Randy, Diana Thomas and her husband Carl, and Pam Koerper and her husband Conrad; and grandchildren, Brittany Jobe and her husband Dalton, and Brandon Thomas; as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her cherished dog, Abby.
The family is especially grateful to Maina Ditmyer for her companionship and support, as well as the wonderful staff and residents at The Enclave for their kindness and community, and Baylor Scott & White for the compassionate care they provided in her final days.
