

Memorial services for Zac G. Shawhan, 101, of Killeen will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 22 at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen. Mr. Shawhan died December 25, 2021, in Copperas Cove. Zac George was born April 25, 1920, in Russell, KS, to Zacha George and Leila (Woelk) Shawhan.
Zac joined the Army Air Corp prior to the United States entering World War II. His father and both uncles served in WWI. He was a pilot in California when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He met Shirley M Pacini in Baltimore after the war, and married her in January 1948 in Rountoul, IL. The family of 5 traveled to Japan. During their life together they had 6 sons.
After retiring from the military in 1960 Zac tried his hand a being an entrepreneur in Colorado. While there, he acquired land that later became part of the Pike-San Isabel National Forest. In 1963 they moved to St Louis where he worked for McDonnell Douglas and participated in the Gemini and Apollo programs. In 1968 URS Corporation established a growth strategy and hired Zac to work in their project office in Killeen, Texas. While in Killeen Zac added a MBA to his schooling. Zac continued to work with other outfits as he began owning commercial buildings in Bell County. He worked closely with David Barr for the last several decades until he retired completely from his civilian career. He was in his mid-90’s when he turned the reigns over to Don and Zac III.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, his wife Shirley and two sons Charles Michael and Von Lee Shawhan.
Survivors include four sons, Don Lee (Karen) Shawhan of Georgetown, Zac G. Shawhan III of College Station, Spencer Strother (Nancy) Shawhan of Zachary, LA and Robert Bruce (Jayn) Shawhan of Hillsborough, N.C.; ten grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
