Celia was born in Abilene, Texas, on March 28, 1950, to Ellis and Carmen Barrera. She is preceded in death by her parents and her beloved brother, Ellis Barrera.
Celia’s active spirit was evident throughout her youth and carried with her throughout her life. She played the saxophone in the school band, was an active member of the GI Forum, and remained devoted to her faith as a longtime member of Saint Vincent Catholic Church. Her radiant personality also shone in her younger years, when she earned recognition through local beauty pageants.
Celia is lovingly survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, J. Richard Castro; her daughters, Veronica Quiroz and Jessica Castro; and her son-in-law, Mark Quiroz. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Payton Magee, Casandra Quiroz, and Timothy Magee, who brought her immense joy throughout her life.
Celia retired after 30 years with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and cherished her days watching her grandchildren grow. She enjoyed decorating, oil painting, traveling, reading, and cooking. Above all else, Celia loved her family, and her unwavering devotion to them will never be forgotten.
Celia was a great listener—honest, funny, intelligent, and deeply faithful. Her strong Catholic faith guided her life and helped shape the values she passed on to her children. She took great pride in creating a warm and beautiful home for those she loved. Celia’s smile will forever light our hearts, and we hold close the hope of being together again one day.
