Charlotte was born and raised in Roanoke, Virginia. There she graduated from William Fleming High School where she was a cheerleader and played basketball. It was at William Fleming that she made many of her lifelong friends, and they formed the Delta Sigma Chi sorority focused on numerous service projects throughout the years. This group of sorority sisters met regularly for over 60 years, and were even acknowledged in a Roanoke Times write-up.
She married Oakey, her high school sweetheart, in 1950. She followed him to Colorado for his service in the Army, and later to Birmingham, Alabama and Orange, Texas when he was transferred for work. They returned to Roanoke in 1983 and retired there. No matter where they were or what season of life
they were in, they were true partners in their marriage devoted to working together to make decisions and sacrifices in support of their family. Charlotte was a stay-at-home mom to her three girls until they
were all in school. She was a loving and dedicated mother, a fabulous cook, and an avid supporter of her daughters’ numerous activities. She also used her talents and creativity as a seamstress to make everything from play clothes to prom dresses, costumes, uniforms, and many crafts. Charlotte later
returned to work, first as a school secretary and then for the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Corrections - Youth Services.
In retirement Charlotte and Oakey traveled around the country in their motorhome for several years, and made numerous trips back to Texas to visit their daughters and grandchildren. Charlotte and Oakey were members of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Daleville, Virginia for 32 years where she
contributed baked goods to numerous church fundraisers and events. After moving back to Texas, she joined Kingwood Methodist Church. A celebration of Charlotte’s life will be held Saturday, September 14, 2024 at Kingwood Methodist Church.
