Pepe graduated from High School in Managua, Nicaragua in 1945 and went on to receive an undergraduate degree in architecture from the National Institute in Managua, Nicaragua in 1950. At age 24 he moved to New Orleans, La. to attend Tulane University where he received an advanced degree in architecture in 1956. Shortly after, Pepe bought his first car, a new ’57 Chevy Belair red convertible, which he described as “the Best car ever made”. On his birthday in 1960 he married Gloria T. Sehlinger. Starting in 1961 Pepe and Gloria had three sons, Jose’ Jr., Lionel and David in three consecutive years. He became a U.S. citizen in 1969 and worked many years as an associate for the architecture firm Harold E. Pique & Associates. After a long career he officially retired in 1992. Pepe relocated with his wife Gloria from New Orleans to Houston in 2005 due to Hurricane Katrina, never to return to New Orleans again.
Pepe enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading, music, Spanish variety shows, the Home Shopping Network and his video library (especially gangster movies). He was an “avid collector of unique items” as his entire family will profess. Pepe also enjoyed cooking and was famous for his special “spicy onion chimichurri”, a recipe he refused to divulge and is likely making for the angels in heaven. He loved his family and grandchildren, ’57 Chevys, Dixie beer, Picayune cigarettes and crawfish/crab boils. His proudest accomplishments were his sons who all graduated college with degrees in Geology, Engineering and Chemistry and all are married with children.
Pepe is preceded in death by his parents, Jose’ J. Sequeira and Guillermina Delgado Sequeira, his sisters Emma, Angela, Ines and brother, Jose’ Antonio Sequeira. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Sequeira, sons, Jose’ J. Sequeira, Jr. and wife Celina, Lionel A. Sequeira and wife Margaret and David J. Sequeira and wife Kimberly, his grandchildren, Jason, Amy, Samantha, Adam, Erin and Stephanie, his first cousin Esperanza McGee and his niece Ines Cordoba.
