Judee passed away on April 25, 2022 in Kingwood, Texas. She was born on March 6, 1946 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania to parents, Nels and Elsie (Swanson) Hammerstom.
Judee graduated from Cherry Hill High School in Cherry Hill, NJ in 1964 and Asbury College in Wilmore, KY in 1969. She completed a Master’s degree in School Counseling at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi and worked as a Certified School Counselor and teacher in New Caney ISD at Roman Forest Elementary and Kings Manor Elementary. Judee started her career as a teacher in Atlanta, GA in 1969 and continued to build her passion for education in Corpus Christi ISD at Blanche Moore Elementary School and at the gifted and talented education program at Windsor Park Elementary School. She was excited to bring the innovative ideas she observed at Windsor Park and Corpus Christi ISD when she was a substitute teacher and volunteer with Humble ISD and during her work with New Caney ISD. She retired from her 40-year career as an educator in 2009.
Judee met her husband Bill in Corpus Christi in September of 1978, and they were married at First Christian Church on August 11, 1979. Judee and Bill were deeply involved in the work of First Christian Church, including organization of the annual Boar’s Head Yule Log Festival. They also served as Middle School Sunday School teachers. Judee and Bill made many friends and built a faithful support group while members of First Christian Church. During her time in Corpus Christi, Judee spent many hours at the Corpus Christi Athletic Club playing tennis. She also enjoyed spending time at the beach and sailing.
Judee, Bill, and their children moved to Kingwood, TX in 1989 due to Bill’s employment with Exxon. Judee immediately became involved in the Trailwood Village Gators Swim Team as a volunteer, including eventually serving as the President for the swim team. She also spent many years playing and hosting bunco as a part of a Kingwood Bunco group. Judee had a flair for visual creativity and design. She was able to express this when she worked at the Puerto Del Padre Condominiums in Port Aransas, TX, and she continued to engage in creative pursuits as a hobby and in her own home throughout her life.
Judee is remembered by former students as a favorite substitute and full-time teacher, who was funny, creative, and caring. She brought an exciting teaching style to the classroom that engaged her students. Judee was also supportive of her children’s education and musical training with her daughter completing a Ph.D. and becoming a professor and her son completing a bachelor’s degree in Music and performing in the symphony at Louisiana State University. Judee also played the coronet in high school and the piano throughout her life.
Judee is preceded in death by her parents, Nels and Elsie Hammerstrom. She is survived by her husband, Bill Alvarez of Porter; her daughter, Courtney Alvarez of Pittsburgh, PA; her son, William Joseph Alvarez of Houston; her sister, Joan Lingle and husband, Carl of Lancaster, PA; and her brother, David Hammerstrom and wife, Nikki of Naples, FL along with numerous other relatives and friends.
Cremation arrangements are being handled by Kingwood Funeral Home.
