June 3, 1939 to September 9, 2016
Peter Mehlert was born in Bremen, Germany and grew up amidst the ravages of WWII. After the loss of a father, stepfather and the family business he traveled to the United States on a freighter with his mother at the age of 13. Sponsored by an American family Pete and his mother settled in Los Angeles, California where Pete finished school and began his career with Carte Blanche/Diners Club International.
When an opportunity was offered to head to the mountains of Wyoming to work as an American cowboy and guest ranch manager, Pete could not refuse. Photographed as "The Marlboro Man" Pete embodied all that one imagines as the consummate horseman, outdoorsman and rancher. It was in Jackson Hole where Pete met and married Nancy Weyrauch, his former wife of 34 years.
Pete and Nancy moved to Texas in the early 1980s and Pete began a long and successful career in commercial property management where he poured his talents and passion into his work. At the apex of his career, Pete was a senior member of the BGK/Rosemont Properties team from 1994 until 2012 where he was the prime driver of the company's expansion into Texas and was instrumental in building the large portfolio Gemini Rosemont owns and manages today in Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Corpus Christi. Michael Mahony, CEO of Gemini Rosemont fondly remembers "When the company forged a relationship with a German investment firm in the 1990's, Pete was our 'go-to-guy,' delighting in hosting our German partners in Houston and making sure they all left with either a pair of cowboy boots or a 10-gallon hat!”
Pete was a passionate lover of dogs, fast cars and this country which afforded him the American dream. Out of Pete's deep respect for those who have won and defended our American freedom, in lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to Wounded Warriors at woundedwarriorproject.org.
