Dear Reuben, I am writing it a while after you left. However, it is only means that even after some year I still remember you. We met briefly, worked only a little on some projects together, went few times for a dinner with you and Dafna ... however You left a big mark in my life. I remember your words and your face saying them. I think you are one of the people who is hard to forget. 
You made my work time in MD Anderson even greater and I will always remember couple of simple but very important messages you kindly shared with me. I will pass them to my kids and grand kids.
Unfortunately we have not met in NZ on your last motorbike trip, however I will do this trip one day and pass the places you passed then.

I would like to convey my warmest condolences on the loss of your beloved husband, father and grandfather.
Many years ago, while still residing in Germany and working for the Pharma division of BASF, I had the great privilege to meet and collaborate with Reuben on retinoids. He had such a winning personality, was upbeat and humorous, extremely bright and creative, generous and with a big heart. In those days, when he stayed overnight at our home in Ludwigshafen, I witnessed how much he loved and cared for his family, when especially you, Dafna, faced health challenges.
Unfortunately, we lost sight of each other. But Reuben had been always on my mind, and he will stay.
The other day, when I tried to find him on the internet, I was shocked to see that he had passed away.
I hope that all the fond memories of happy times you could share together may help you to cope with this very sad loss.

I just learned of Reuben's death. It is so hard to believe he is gone. However he was the kind of person who makes such an imprint on one that ones memories of him will remain vivid forever. He was so thoughtful and generous and I feel he mentored me, even though I wasn't directly in his lab.  I last saw him when I visited MD Anderson last year and he came to my talk and visited with me. I was so honored, especially when he told me he had retired!I am comforted by my shared memories of him and the kindnesses that he showed to me over the years. My heartfelt sympathies to his family.

Reuben, you touched so many peoples’ hearts so deeply and you left a hole in each one of our hearts.  But in that hole, we also find the love that you had for life, family and friends.  I remember fondly of the smiles on your face as you showed me the drawings that you did for your drawing class.  Now, every time I come to your house, I look at your favorite two drawings on the wall and marvel at your creativity and talent in art.   I am taking the same class now in your memory.  As I do each drawing, I will think of you.  I will think about the long conversation that we had on the phone on the day you came home from your last leg surgery.  Your surgery did not go as planned, but you said it turned out even better than planned.  You always looked at the positive side of things! I will think about Amy Tan’s audiobook “The bonesetter’s daughter” which you listened to and thought about me and my mother.  I will try to find excitement in life no matter how hard caregiving becomes.  I can’t believe that you are gone, but you still live in my dreams. We read the wonderful tributes already given to Reuben, and they are all true.  Never have we known a more inquisitive, passionate scientist.  Indeed, Reuben was a scientist’s scientist, curious about everything in the world around him.  He was also a consummate “people” person, helping more mentees and colleagues in science and in life than anyone will ever know.  And of course, he was a family man first, loving all of you so deeply.  We are very proud to have been Reuben’s colleagues and good friends, and privileged to have seen and learned from all the qualities that made him so special.  There is little to comfort us from his passing, except the spirit he engendered from which we will continue to learn and often be guided by.

I wish you could see what we wrote here. I am always regret that I did not tell you that I appreciate you so much before I left Houston last year. I am saddened beyond words but thankful that Reuben passed surrounded by what he loved most, you guys. I send my love and prayers wishing I was not afar to be able to give you all a big hug. In the twenty five years I knew Reuben he was not only my intellectual inspiration  as a brilliant scientist but a father figure who embrassed me- along with Dafna when I was away from my own family. His positive energy made our lab a joyful place to be. I remember how every bench would be playing a different radio station-from Brad’s rock to Dafna’s classical; and, how he would pass by and say: “I like that song.” He was indeed a great conductor of human interactions…no matter how diverse his band was. Reuben was indeed an extraordinary person! We are blessed to have had him in our lives; and, because of this my love and admiration will be as eternal as the joyful and graceful memories he left for all of us. Knowing him, I am pretty sure some new committee is being formed right now... up-there in the Great Heavens! May His Memory Be Eternal.

It was indeed a privilege to work with Reuben. His pride in his family was always foremost. He was a dedicated and talented scientist and a wise  and thoughtful mentor and teacher. His passion for motor bikes was another fascinating component of his personality.

Our world is poorer for his passing.

I was shocked and saddened to learn only this weekend of Reuben's passing earlier this month.  He was the Deputy Vice President of Cancer Prevention under Dr. Bernard Levin, at MD Anderson Cancer Center when I first came for my postdoctoral fellowship in cancer prevention.  I remember his kindness for others and his passion for retinols and "orphan" retinol receptors.  I also remember his long-term love for motorcycles and how a recent accident reminded him how much more he loved other parts of his life.  His passing is made more sad in that he only recently started stepping back from his work in cancer prevention to spend more time doing other things beyond the walls at MD Anderson.  He will be missed.

It was a privilege to know and work with Reuben.  He was an esteemed scientist, a wonderful collaborator, a passionate teacher and mentor.  A fine and loving man.  He is so greatly missed by so many.  To his life!

I was sad to hear today from Yona about the death of Reuben,  We met at the early 80th and I was impresssed with Reuben intelctual capacity, great personality, devotopn to science and love to his family.  He alwas was a model for a sucssessful scientist that Israel failed to preserve.  Wish you all the best.

I express my deep condolence to hear that Reuben passed away.
Reuben was not only an excellent scientist but also a warm-hearted nice person. I was trained as a postdoctoral fellow in Department of Tumor Biology, MD Anderson from 1985 to 1987. My boss was Dr. Tatsuro Irimura. Reuben and Tatsuro were close friends. Therefore, I could often talk with Reuben. He seemed to really enjoy science, and beside Reuben, there was Dafna working for him in his laboratory. They were really a well-matched lovely couple. I remember it as well as if it was yesterday. I miss Reuben.

My father taught me to put my family first, work hard, love what I do, and shoot for the stars.  He led by example.  My favorite phrase from his retirement was that he took his work very seriously, but never took himself too seriously.  While I wish that he could be with us for many more years, I am comforted by the realization that he lived such a rich life on his own terms for the time we had with him.  I remember him saying that he felt immortal, in a way, because he lives on in his children and grandchildren.  I know this is true when I see his best qualities all around me.  All my love, your son, Ori.

I want to tell you a sad but true story.  Reuben, my wise uncle with a heart of gold, who knew how to show his love to everyone, who always had a smile to share, our dear Reuben, is gone.
I want to go scream, to break the silence and the loneliness.  Instead, I am wandering the streets with my head bowed, my steps dragging, without being able to escape the reality chasing me. My dearest friend in whom I could confide anything, who was always there for me, with whom I could speak about myself without fear of appearing weak, who never judged or criticized me, my dear uncle who always had good advice and consolation for me, is no longer here.
Yet, I am here and know I owe you so much.  You have been in my life since I was seven years old, when you carved me dolls out of avocado pits.  You accompanied me throughout my life and were available to give advice on all my difficult decisions.  You, my dear uncle, who granted each request no matter how big or small, will no longer be here. 
I can’t understand how you will not be with us.  You who loved life, who gave hope and belief to all, will not be present to keep us company.
You were here, you were irreplaceable, and you disappeared.  You will never again caress us with your kind eyes.  My mother, Edna, loved you with all her heart and soul, and I naively thought you would live forever.  But, my dearest uncle, you passed on with humility and a noble spirit. 
And so you were beautiful unto your last breath, so loved and admired.  I miss you.

Dear Dafna and Family: Reuben was my teacher in Cancer Biology when I was a student at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.  The memory of his passion for Cancer Research that spilled over into his lectures was still fresh in my memory when as  faculty,  I was invited to join a team of distinguished researchers (Reuben and Ethan) to study lung cancer therapeutics.  You can imagine my surprise and excitement to find out that my teacher was welcoming me to work with his team.  Although our team only worked together a few years, our conferences took me back in time:  Reuben showed the same strength, curiosity, skepticism and passion for finding the "link" between etiology and treatment that I had seen him express as a student.  I am vey sorry for your loss, we share your grief, as we will all miss him.

We were shocked and so very saddened when Dafna called with the bad news.
Our friendship goes back to the Weizmann Institute days. Never before nor ever thereafter, have we met a couple who worked jointly, so dedicated to the cause and to each other, in all aspects of life: career, family, hobbies.  All done with inspiration, so much mutural admiration, friendship and love.  We first interacted more with Dafna and the boys, when the Lotan boys and our kids were active swimmers.  But we did have opportunities to witness Reuben's wisdom, knowledge and willingness to personally assist others. Many are intelligent, but Reuben was versed in various fields, and also gifted with the ability and kindness to be a good listener.  He was most proud of his family, always first mentioned   Dafna's achievements, the boys scholastic, and career successes, never forgot to proudly tell about their spouses and the grandchildren. We feel so very fortunate for having been recently with Reuben and Dafna, just about 4 months ago, when they came down to visit us in Austin, and immediately thereafter, when they hosted us so graciously with our son and three grandcihldren in their lovely new home, in Houston.  Reuben has just begun returning to another of his talents, drawing and painting.  Such a great loss.  He lived a full life, was appreciated and loved by so many, and as Dafna says, he also died the way he wished to.  Perhaps the latter can serve a bit of consolation. 
May his soul rest in peace.

Dearest Reuben, I am so sorry that I will not meet you together with Dafna at the airport in Houston, every time I would come for a visit to the MD Anderson and the many times I stayed at your house and visited your family... You belong to my scientific carrier, to the brazilian and latin american oncologic meetings I have organized over the last 20 years... Our trips to Fernando de Noronha, the brazilian Pantanal, to south Bahia, to Guaruja, to Chile, to Mexico, will always stay in my mind... Also, all over the world at the Differentiation meetings, in the early Retinoids time... all the AACR and ASCO , and more... But most important of all, was the standing friendship, the true support to all my questions and the philosophical exchanges of concepts and our debates on spirituality. I used to say that when my patients asked me if I believed there was life after death, I dared to say that I was sure there was... And you, as a non believer, was always paying attention at the synchronicity and maybe, listened to some of my ideas... Now you are in eternity... in our thoughts and feelings, we are connected... You went before us and maybe, you are experiencing the rewards of such a wonderful life of giving all your efforts for science and the cure of cancer, in education and companionship, with joy and happiness... I hope I am right and death is just a matter of another state of mind... May God bless you and your family, may we connect through our hearts, forever... Take care, my dear friend Reuben... I have known Reuben since he was on my committee as a graduate student.  He was so giving of his time and expertise.  His generosity and intelligence helped scores of students, post-docs, and faculty.  I will miss him very much.

It is very hard to talk about Rueben in past tense. We start a generation back; Rueben’s parents were good friends of Shula’s parents and used to get together every week for decades in Israel. Shula still remembers Rueben’s mother telling her about him dating Dafna and how much Rueben’s mother loved her. 

Rueben was always exceptional and a renaissance man. A very gifted scientist, a gifted artist, an avid motorcyclist, and most of all, always had a big smile, kindness, and warmth to everybody he talked to.

Rueben and Dafna were beside us, supporting and nurturing in many hard and happy moments. They made us feel like family and we get joy seeing our kids and grandkids continue the friendship.

Rueben will be greatly missed in our family and our lives. Our thoughts and love are with Dafna, Ori, Yair, and Dan and their families.

We always marveled at Reuben's remarkable intelligence, intense intellectual drive, great curiosity, and his passion for everything he loved. I could not believe the message on Reuben's passing Numson dropped to me  when I was on vocation with my family on August 3rd. I listened to the message several times to make sure I were not wrong. I was so sad and shocked to lose such a great man who had been one of my best mentors and friends. I had fortune to work with him for 8 years, the most important period that has impacted my scientific career. I had learned a lot from him both in science and in other aspects. I could not have today's achivements without his mentoship, support and inspiration. I was so lucky I had a long chat about science and many other things when I visited Houston and stayed in his house last November. We still have some unplished manuscripts together. There are many many unforgetable memories in my heart. At this moment I still could not believe that Reuben has gone. I has been promoted to tenured full professor in the Emory University this year. I dedicate this achievemnt and honor to Reuben in memory of his great mentoship and inspiration.

I was truly fortunate to have a loving father.  He served as a great guide throughout my childhood and into my adult life. He was always passionate about everything he did but first and foremost his family. There was always a joy about him that was infectious to all that were around him.  I am very touched by how much he impacted everyone who was fortunate to meet him.  He had an inquisitive nature and an adventurous spirit that was an inspiration to others.  
He will be missed but not forgetten.

I knew Reuben for a relatively short period of time, but it quickly became very clear what kind of person he was.  He was very thoughtful and caring!  He was always ready to help someone who needed it. Reuben worked very hard and enjoyed life to the fullest!  He was appriecated and respected by colleagues, friends and family.  He will be missed by everyone.

We are fortunate to have known such a kind and generous person.  During family gatherings, I always saw a loving grandparent, father and husband.  The immense love and respect the Lotans showed each other are an inspiration for my husband and me.  We will continually cherish our memories of Dr. Lotan.  He and his family are in our thoughts. No, No, No, I don’t believe, it is true! We still have unfinished work to discuss and I would like to ask you for help. Reuben will live with us forever. He was a great mentor, friend, and father figure. Dafna, please accept my heartfelt condolences and be strong in this difficult time for you, your family, and us. Reuben lived in a wonderful and pleasant life with a great achievement in his profession. He will rest in peace. His selfless, passion, and great spirit for life and work will carry on and on. Reuben was a great man whose intellect was only exceeded by his heart.  He impacted the lives of so many, myself included. I will always cherish his advice regarding priorities for the academician: do great work but family comes first. All the generations of my family will miss him dearly.

Our friendship started in early 1970s when Reuben was a student in Dr. Nathan Sharon's laboratory in Israel and I was a student in Dr. Toshiaki Osawa's laboratory in Japan.  We were characterizing a lectin from peanut in the west and east edge of the Eurasia continent.  When I joined Dr. Garth Nicolson's laboratory in UC Irvine I found him there and started working more closely together.  I still remember while he was back in Israel and visited us at MD Anderson we worked day and night for two weeks to get something our to publish.  Later, we were very happy to find him as a faculty member with us.  Reuben was always extremely energetic, clear and practical in science, and thoughtful in many ways.  He has been my mentor, though he is only few years older.  I always admired him and wanted to be like him but never be able to be.  Reuben, I miss you a lot.  My visit to Houston this time was not expected to be a sad one like this.  But it is an unforgettable occasion for me with overwhelming memories coming back.  Reuben, your great achievement and your beautiful life stay with us forever.

Reuben, you were such an inspirational figure for our family. Although the times we physically met were numbered, it was an honor and a privilege to maintain an over-the-phone/email relationship with you and my wonderful great aunt, Dafna. Every time I needed an advice or a good word, you were there, and I will forever be grateful for that. We have a very strong and loving family, and I know that simply by maintaining your memory and legacy, we will continue to strive and contribute to the greater good of people allover. My family and I were deeply shocked by the sudden death of Prof. Reuben Lotan.We had known him for almost 25 years and greatly appreciated not only his outstanding contribution to carcinogenesis but also his warm personality and friendship. It is still really hard to believe we shall never seen him again.

The outstanding mentorship I have received from Reuben will follow me throughout the rest of my life. Without his support during and following my post-doc years... I wouldn’t be where I am today. He helped me writing a successful grant application that brought me from Berlin to Houston. He guided me through research and life's obstacles, helped a family member of mine to get curing cancer treatment at MD Anderson, and lastly supported my transition to pharmaceutical drug development, my life-long dream. His humble attitude and wisdom made a lasting impression on me I'm forever thankful for. Reuben was a great respecter of people, including the young and old. He used to say "I will offer help to everyone equally, however, the outcome is in your hand." He was a great mentor and an amazing person… all in one! I will miss Reuben.

Reuben was a prodigious help during my sister Yvonne's  illness last year and I will be eternally grateful for his expert advice all through this long and trying time  and for his boundless generosity. Our entire family will miss him dearly.

Rueben was a true mensch - a man of greatness. He was incredibly caring, intensely passionate about so many things, a wonderfully gifted scientist, but his greatest pride was his family. Marlene and I are deeply saddened to hear about the death of Reuben. He was a wonderful colleague and I am truly honored to be among his many friends. We will treasure the memory of Reuben and the wonderful times we spent together at Differentiation Therapy Meetings throughout the world. Lamya and I were devastated to hear of the loss of our beloved Reuben.  He was a wonderful friend and mentor, so full of life, and so complete in his appreciation of its magic and mystery.  He was a constant friend and companion to so many of us in the field of cancer research, a guide, an inspiration and a role model.  He lived life to its fullest and loved many things about it, caring for people in his own unique and generous style.  More than anything, or anyone, he loved you and his family, and was unafraid of showing that love.  We will miss him for the rest of our days, and will have to be comforted by the thought that it was our privilege and honor to know such a genuinely great, kind and giving man. I have such wonderful memories of you on our motorcycle trips back in the day.  I knew you as a brilliant, humble and a very kind man. Elmore use to tell me; don’t speak what you don't know around this crowd. As they were all very successful people!  Well Elmore was right for the most part, but with you Reuben it did not matter.  You are so intelligent yet easy to speak with.  I never felt worried how I sounded in front of you!  Rest in peace my friend.  Your family will be in my prayers.  You will be missed as you are so loved by many.
