Russell was my nearest first cousin only 2 years older. We grew up literally about 2 blocks from each other. I remember at about age 10ish he introduced me to a Beatles song called Hey Jude. At the time I couldn’t really connect the dots he was talking about. I thought maybe it was important to him because of his older sister named Judy but that wasn’t it. He was trying to help me understand just how iconic the song was and still is. This thought came back to me when we saw Paul McCartney live last year. I don’t know how he knew how good the song was but he did. I also remember us playing and trying to sing Proud Mary. Later on Russell really got into the music of Chicago in his teen years and even later he steered me toward Wille Nelson. I remember one time being his helper in doing a brake job on a yellow Mustang he had. I regret that we didn’t stay close into adulthood but I always loved him and enjoyed being around him every time we saw each other. Rest in peace cousin.
