Shirley Ann Christian passed away at the age of 82 on November 7, 2023. Shirley is survived by her brother William Matt Christian; her three daughters Kathryn Jay, Amy Johnson, and Julie Cooney; her five grandchildren Grant Johnson, Morgan Miranda, Kate Cooney, Annabel Jay, and Arlo Jay; and her one great-grandchild, Danielle Miranda. She is also survived by her “soul sister” Stephanie Rupp Wheeler.
Shirley graduated from Sweeny High School in 1959 and from Sam Houston State University in 1962, where she was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. She also earned a Certificate in Special Education at the University of Houston, Clear Lake. Shirley started teaching right out of college in Alvin and then kept teaching for the next thirty-five years, with her longest time at Parkview Intermediate School in Pasadena.
Shirley loved spending time outside in her garden, which always blossomed under her careful attention. Her thumbs were very green! She also loved reading and trying out new recipes, making herb wreaths and vinegars, traveling to new places (Croatia! Ireland! Italy!), and playing bridge. Shirley started every day with two cups of black coffee and her morning devotional reading, both of which made her day better.
Shirley adored decorating for the holidays, most especially Christmas, with her Santa and heart ornaments her special favorites. Most of all, Shirley delighted in being a grandmother and she spent much of her later years helping take care of her grandkids.
Though all that gardening took a toll on her back and a host of other health struggles sometimes slowed her down, Shirley lived her life with verve and gusto, making so many great friends along her journey. Even in her most painful moments, she believed life was an adventure to be savored. She had a hearty laugh and the most amazing smile.
Her daughters are holding a Celebration of Life ceremony on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at 2pm at the Kingwood Funeral Home. Though we will miss her dearly, we encourage all who attend to bring a sense of holiday cheer as we celebrate Shirley’s life on what would have been her 83rd birthday.
