Allan is survived by his wife Jean Walter, son Jeff Walter (Deborah), and daughter Lisa Stanley (Erik), as well as his grandchildren Emilie Stanley (Caitlin) and Luna Stanley. He was preceded in death by his parents Art and Desneige, and his son-in-law Ron Stanley. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Allan, will always be remembered for his devotion to people, humility, and joyful nature.
Born on June 10, 1945, in Toronto, Allan grew up the eldest son of Art and Marie Desneige Walter and brother to his eldest sister Carol (Dick) and younger siblings: Raymond (Marlene), Jacqueline (Doug), Stephen (Cathy) Michael (Joanne), Christopher (Natalie) and Frank (Janice). Being the eldest, Al spent a lot of time minding his younger brothers while keeping them safe from all their shenanigans.
On August 17, 1968, Allan married the love of his life, Jean Walter. The two shared a deep and committed love of 56 years. A love that has served as a model for their children and grandchildren. Together they spent much of their summers at home landscaping their beautiful gardens and watching the birds visiting their feeder. They also enjoyed road trips across North America and travelling.
Allan was an active member and lector of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He helped with the establishment of its beginnings as it transitioned from school gyms to the beautiful church it is today.
A dedicated teacher, Allan devoted his career to the children who attended school through the Waterloo Region District School Board, where he taught junior and intermediate levels at Monsignor Haller, Our Lady of Grace, and St. Timothy’s. Allan spent a significant part of his career as a teacher-librarian where he could share his love of books with children. Throughout his career he coached track-and-field, basketball, baseball and his favourite, volleyball. “Mr. Walter” always enjoyed meeting up with students who he had taught as they shared how being one of his students influenced their lives in so many ways.
Allan always looked forward to time in the outdoors fishing, canoeing and camping with his brothers, his cousin Joe Morin (Carol), his brother-in-law Dick, and his son Jeff. In his spare time, he crafted beautiful wooden furniture and worked on upgrades to the house.
Allan lived his final years at University Gates long term care with his wife Jean at his side every day. His face always lit up at her visits and they enjoyed walks, sitting by the pond and in the sunroom, and sharing an ice cream cone.
We are grateful for the support of our dear friends David and Sharon. We also thank the special staff and residents of the Wright Community for the care provided to Allan in his final years. We are so appreciative of Dr. Day, Greta and the nursing staff at St. Mary's General Hospital for support of Allan and our family in his final days. They truly honoured Allan’s life while providing guidance and comfort to all of us.
Visitation will take place at Westmount Memorial Celebration Centre on Friday, January 17, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A mass to celebrate Allan’s life will be held on Saturday, January, 18 at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament church officiated by Monsignor Sheridan. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson Canada or a charity of your choice.
