I know whose tears would come down to me,
Mother o' mine, O mother o' mine
- Rudyard Kipling
Anne Patterson McKinnis (Smith) Payne (aka Annie Payne), died peacefully on March 17, 2017 at home in her residence at Kitchener Ontario. She was preceded in passing by her husband, Stan; her son Thomas, and her daughter Nadine.
Born near 95 years ago in Glasgow, Scotland, in her lifetime, Annie was loved and cherished as a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, great-great grandmother and genuinely beautiful and real woman. Her circle of family and friends enjoyed and appreciated her company and her beautiful gift of humour. Her warmth and her kindred spirit shone from the echoes of Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow, Scotland to the various out-port communities dotted along the southern shore of Newfoundland. She moved to south western Ontario in 1985 where she continued to share her joy and good will with everyone she met. Fully dedicated to her family, she loved and cherished her children and welcomed every next generation addition with enthusiasm and care. Never a day went by that she did not encourage us and demonstrate her pride and joy in our accomplishments.
Annie met her husband Stan In 1942 during his duty as a naval soldier while she worked in Fairfield Shipyard in Govan, Scotland. They were subsequently married and had 8 children; 5 boys and 3 girls. She boasts 16 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Annie loved to celebrate the landmarks of life, loved dancing and parties and was blessed with a beautiful singing voice. A devoted supporter of the Liberal Party, she believed everyone mattered and deserved respect and compassion. She supported and attended the Anglican Church but to be honest, although she rolled up her sleeves and did her part, she didn’t care very much for the outdated views of organized religion.
Visitation will be held at Westmount Memorial Celebration Centre, 1001 Ottawa St. S., Kitchener, (519-743-8900) on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., with a service to be conducted in the Chapel on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Williamsburg Cemetery. Special recognition and appreciation to Dr. Tamara Hollings, Paramedic Nurses, Jenna and staff at Care Partner and Bayshore; special thanks to Claudette. More than anything however, we are forever proud of and grateful to Annette for her unwavering love, duty and dedication in Mom’s care.
