Born September 2, 1932 in Kitchener to William and Edna Smith, Delores was the third of four children. She is predeceased by her parents and three siblings: Donald, Elizabeth (Betty), and Ross. After leaving high school at KCI, she worked for a time at Forsythe Shirt Co. Her twenty-three year marriage to Nelson produced five boys: Kevin (Lois), Kirk, Kerry, Kerwin, and Kelly. She was very proud of all of her boys as well as her three grandchildren: Zacharay, Rena, and Matthew.
After the birth of her first son, she became a stay-at-home mom. She loved to cook and was an extremely prolific baker. She also loved to knit whether for her children, grandchildren, or charitable events at the church.
She also took great joy in her many years of service to the Lord as a Sunday School teacher at Calvin Presbyterian Church. She would spend many hours preparing for each Sunday’s lesson which allowed her artistic side to flourish. For a period, she was also the church custodian.
After the YWCA’s Phiat Social Club dissolved in the late 1950’s, Delores continued her lifelong friendship with seven other ladies who met socially on a regular basis for over forty years. She truly cherished her time with these ladies at “Club” where she found a true sense of belonging.
Friends will be received at Westmount Funeral Chapel, 1001 Ottawa St. S., Kitchener, (519-743-8900) from 7 – 9 pm Thursday, February 6, 2014. A memorial service will be held at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 248 Westmount Rd. E., Kitchener, on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 11:00 am. Interment in Williamsburg Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would request that consideration be given to making a donation to the Alzheimer Society.
