Doug will be lovingly remembered by his children Greg (Dana), Candice (Matt), and Brian (Meghan). Precious memories are left with his grandchildren Caeden, Ava, Luke and Scott. Survived by his brother Brad, predeceased by his parents Edgar and Doris, and his siblings; Brenda (Carl) Underhill, Pat (Gord) Pinder and Marilyn (Mel) Hansford. Doug was the fourth of five children born on the family homestead in Chesley Ontario to Doris and Edgar Teschke. Going to school in a one room schoolhouse and helping his Dad on the farm fostered Doug’s love of the outdoors and hard work. Doug felt most at home in a tent in the wilderness. His love of nature and working with his hands made him an enthusiastic camper and scout leader. Year after year he guided young men in the ways of survival and community service; his greatest adventures being the Canadian Jamborees. Amazingly, he always seemed to bump into someone he knew, no matter where he was. He was lucky enough to find his calling as a heavy equipment mechanic. Doug took great pride in being able to rescue a piece of machinery from peril, allowing a farmer or contractor to continue their important work. Rather than taking a break, weekends that weren’t spent in the bush were spent renovating his century home with his kids. Doug loved children, particularly babies. Nothing made him happier than sitting and holding his children and grandchildren. He never forgot a birthday and kept every memento, picture and craft. Fond memories were made during epic News Years Eve games of Risk, which he always insisted on finishing, even if it took all night. He always won, no matter how hard we tried or how confident we were that this year would be our year. He was a quiet man, but kids could always manage to get him talking and laughing, explaining why so many of the pictures we have of him are of him smiling at a child. He was a music lover, insisting there were only two types of music worth listening to: Country and Western.
As we grew and had families of our own, Doug spent many happy afternoons with his siblings who lived locally and all his vacation time in New Brunswick with his sister and brother-in-law. He enjoyed the slower pace of the East coast and kept busy helping with home improvement projects.
When at home Doug could be found enjoying a cold beer while puttering in his workshop (likely overbuilding something- a trait he passed on to Greg), taking in a Formula 1 race, hockey game or good movie.
Doug was many things in his life: Mechanic, Scout Leader, Chief BBQ’er, Gamer, Weather Aficionado, Family Baker, Sports Fan, Handy Man and Beer Connoisseur.
But to us he was Dad, and he will forever be remembered and missed.
Thank you for remembering him with us,
Greg, Candice and Brian
