She was the cherished wife of the late Wilhelm (2025) with whom she shared 68 years of marriage, and the loving mother to Diana (Ron). She was a proud and deeply loved grandmother to Tyler, Connor and Cole (Natasia). She is also survived by her sister-in- law, Vera, and by nieces and nephews in Germany. Elisabeth was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Elisabeth Nagel, parents-in-law Friedrich and Martha Albrecht, sister-in-law Ilse and brothers-in-law Fritz and Hans.
Elisabeth was born in Hungary in 1931. During the war in 1944, she and her mother fled to Germany and were reunited with her father a year later. In 1953, Elisabeth and her parents immigrated to Canada. They first settled in Vanessa, Ontario where they worked on a tobacco farm, before making their home in Kitchener. It was there that Elisabeth met the love of her life, Wilhelm.
Elisabeth and Wilhelm were married on March 31, 1956, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, where they remained lifelong members of the congregation.
Over the years, Elisabeth worked at Forsyth Shirt Factory, Kaufmann Rubber and Central Meat Market. She and Wilhelm were longtime members of the Kitchener Schwaben Club, where they enjoyed many dances with good friends. They also loved visiting beaches across Ontario for picnics with their daughter, later their grandsons and with visitors from overseas. Their favourite places were The Pinery and Turkey Point.
In 1978, Elisabeth and Wilhelm moved to a farm near New Dundee, where they remained until 2024. Elisabeth found great joy in spending time with family and friends, cooking and baking, sewing and knitting and tending to her garden, which was her happy place.
After a short stay at Chartwell Westmount Retirement Home and following Wilhelm’s passing, Elisabeth moved to Columbia Forest Long Term Care Home in February 2025. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Watson House at Columbia Forest and the Warm Embrace caregivers for their care and support during Elisabeth’s time there. Special thanks also goes to good friends Werner and Alice for their regular visits over the years.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Elisabeth’s life, the visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 31 from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm at Westmount Memorial Celebration Centre, 1001 Ottawa St. S, Kitchener, immediately followed by a memorial service. A reception provided by the Women’s Association of St. Andrew’s, will follow. A private interment at Woodland Cemetery will take place after the reception.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church TV and Social Media Ministry would be appreciated.
