NICHOLS, CLIFFORD P., age 86, of Knoxville, passed away peacefully at Hillcrest North Thursday, November 3. He was a proud and patriotic American who devoted much of his life to serving his country, first as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and then for 25 years as a United States Marine. Sgt. Nichols saw extensive combat action during World War II, including the battles of Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima and Okinawa, where he was severly wounded. After his recovery, he remained on active duty through the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. During his later years, Clifford lived quietly in North Knoxville with his beloved dog, Princess. He loved to play the guitar and was an avid gardener. He was also a frequent and honored guest at his baby sister Julia’s holiday dinners where he entertained and delighted his kinfolks with colorful stories and witticisms from his younger days. Mr. Nichols was preceded in death by his father, William Nichols; mother, Lizzy Nichols; wife, Bobbie Nichols; brothers, Joe and Charles Nichols; sisters, Clersa Hurst, Aline Monday and Lenna Bridges.
He is survived by sister, Julia Wilson; several nieces and nephews; and close friends Loretta Suthard and Greg Cechi. Special thanks to the kind nursing staff at Hillcrest North for the comfort and care they provided Mr. Nichols during his final days.
Graveside service will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday at Lynnhurst Cemetery with military honors by Tennessee National Guard. Arrangements by Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel of Berry Funeral Home. Condolences may be offered at www.lynnhurstchapel.com SEMPER FIDELIS
