Mr. Boring was wonderful to me during a very difficult Senior year when I lost my mother and boyfriend during that year.  When I worked at the City-County building, I would see him on occasion. He always said hello and was so nice.  He touched so many lives.  What a wonderful legacy to leave!  He is singing and dancing in heaven right now.  And, he is being welcomed by so many of his friends and family members. Class of '76.

Mr Boring was a great leader.  Thanks for sharing your Dad all those years and God bless you in the days to come.

My Mentor, My Friend, My Guardian Angel

 Mr. Boring ran with patience the race that was set before him.  Jesus said, “If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be:  if any man serve me, him will my Father honor” (John 12:26).  I want to honor Mr. Boring today by, “being ready always to give an answer to every man that ask me a reason of the hope that is in me with meekness and fear” (1Peter 3:15).
 First of all, I have hope because of what my Father in Heaven did for me through the work that Jesus completed on the cross.  Second, I have hope because God sends guardian angels to watch over us when we need them most.  As a 14 year old, I needed a man in my life that lived what Jesus said: “It is more blessed to give than receive” (Acts 20:35).
 Mr Boring gave me a job in the cafeteria in 1970 to 1972, as well as a summer job in 1971.  He would sign for me in detention hall and pay me to pick up trash on the campus.  He gave to me.  “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will He pay him again: (Proverbs 19:17).  Thank God for the givers of this world!  How many hundreds and thousands have been touched by my Guardian Angel?  
 Just when you think that you are just another number in the thousands of young men and women that Mr. Boring touched, you find out that you are special in the eyes of a great man.  I ran into Mr. Boring around 1994. at the City/County Building where we both worked.  I said to him, “Mr. Boring, I know that you won't remember me, but I want to thank you for all that you did for me.”  He looked at me with that patented look and said, “Braden, who could forget you?”  Twenty years after I had graduated, he knew who I was!
 I am more fortunate than most Central High School Alumni in that I was able to sit down with Mr. Boring many times from 1994 to 2006 and just talk.  He reminds me of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in that he knows me personally and has touched my life personally.
 “And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, write, blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth:  Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them (Revelation 14:13).  Rest great Bobcat for your works follow you to your resting place.  Because you have touched so many, these works will multiply exponentially.  Jesus says that He will reward you according to your works.  I am a living testimony of one of those works and am humbled to have known such an angel as you.

It was the spring of 1978 and I had left my homework in the band room after Mr. Woodall had left the campus.  I went to the school office to find a solution and Mr. Boring happen to be the one who heard my dilemma.  He said "Aren't you McCluskey?"  When I acknowledged that I was, he reached in his pocket and handed me a single key to get back into the band room.  I knew it was the key to every door at Central High School and I felt honored that he would entrust it to me.  I returned it promptly.  Jay McCluskey, Class of 1978

Mr.Boring was a remarkable man!  I know he helped me so many times when I was at Central.  My husband, Daryl, just told me yesterday that he  was teamed up with him in a Golf game several years ago how ironic was that!  He really enjoyed their visit together, talking about the days when we were at Central.  I know he will be loved an missed very much.  Our prayers an thoughts are with your family!

When there is talk of Central High School, there are memories of Mr. Borning.  Dan and Janie, thank you for sharing the pictures of your Dad and families.  God bless you all and give you comfort.

Mr.Boring was the football coach when I attended CHS (1049-1953. He was a true leader and man of class. We shall all miss him.

I am so very saddened to hear of Mr. Boring's passing!  I was honored to be an incoming freshman in 1958, his first year as principal, as well as a member of the graduating class of 1962, Mr. Boring's first four year graduating class.

He was not only a wonderful man but also an equally fine educator and administrator.  As a student at CHS, I knew him to be strict yet fair, whose door was always open to us.

He will most certainly and most surely be missed by all who ever had the priviledge and honor of meeting him and/or knowing him in or out of school!

Coach Boring was instrumental in my attending East Tennessee  State College on a football scholarship.  I am sure that he arranged a meeting/interview with Hal Littleford  that ended in my playing for ETSC. Mr. Boring was a true inspiration and role model for so many people, myself included. He was tough, stern, and disciplined on the outside, but underneath he was genuinely compassionate and obviously cared deeply about young people. I'm sure that all of us who attended Central while he was coach or principal knew this about him and respected him for it. I suspect all of the thousands of us whose lives he touched continue to carry with them some of his strength and toughness as well as his compassion and love. I will never forget when we returned from up north in 1961 and enrolled at CHS just how much help Dan Boring was to our family. Seeing him at the CHS celebration at the TN Theatre we briefly talked about the many memories of CHS.  He was an inspiration to all students and I am very proud to say he was my principle 1961-1965. He will be missed. The family should have comfort knowing he is at peace now but will always remain in our memories.  God Bless all of the family.

In my freshman year my-self, brother and sister where going through things at home and we all ended up in the office at the same time. I still remember to this day what kindness this man had for the children he had under him. Always listen and was a very fair man. What an honor that CHS had Dan Boring for a  principal. My thoughts go out to his family for their loss.

Coach Dan had the same intensity with our track team as he did with football.  An inspiration and motivator to all young Bobcats.
May every family member, friend, and acquaintance be blessed with the same caring attention that Coach Dan exhibited.

Early in Mr. Boring's career as CHS principal, the CHS '61 yearbook staff wrote: "... Mr. Boring's untiring patience has helped many students realize the value of education.  He is respected by all who know him.  The class of 1961 will never forget his firm but kind help."   Next year as our class gathers for our reunion, we will not have forgotten.  We will remember him warmly and with much gratitude for the quiet, yet profound, influence and role he played in our lives.

Principal Boring was my principal from 1973-77. I always thought of him as a fair and caring man. My sympathy goes out to all that knew and loved him.

Just reading all of the words of encouragement and honor to this man has taken me back, if only briefly, to a simpler time. Dan Boring deserves it all. Preachers, teachers, lawyers, doctors, police officers, and professionals from all walks of life would love to hear the words expressed here at their own passing. He earned it all. Allan Webb 1971

Mr. Boring had to put a few of us band members in our place back in 1973-74. Our prayers are with his family and we were fortunate to have such a man as our principal.

An honorable and fair man, who positively influenced the lives of thousands of his students, teammates, peers and friends.  One could do worse in life than aspire to equal the admirable legacy and reputation of Dan Boring.

Dan was a great football player and was all football as our coach. He saw no reason to loose if there was a way to win. If we lost {which was very seldom} we lost--the other didnot win!!! After high school I ran into Dan many places and we always dicussed what we should have done to win but he was a great friend also> I went to see him last month and he knew me but could hardly speak> I will never forget Coach Boring and our prayers are with family and his sweet wife!!

While attending Central, Mr. Boring represented (in my young eyes) the strict, respected, silent leader behind the scenes... while Assistant Principal Earl Hoffmeister was the gregarious personality, always joking and mingling with students. It wasn't until several years later, when I dropped by Central to inquire about substitute-teaching, that I realized what a genuinely compassionate, kind-hearted person he was. Mr. Boring quickly & warmly welcomed me into his office. His eyes lit up as he proudly talked about Janie, & he smiled more during that conversation than I saw in my entire 4 years at Central. I treasure the memory.

Mr. Boring was an awesome presence in the halls of Central High School.  I remember when Ms. Brickey was retiring and the office workers were having a "forbidden" going-away party for her.  I snuck out of gym because my sister worked in the office. I grabbed a cupcake and stuck my head in Mr. Boring's office (he quickly shoved his tootsie roll pop under his desk) and told him not to tell anyone but we were having a party and I wanted to share with him.  He just smiled and accepted.  He always called me Smiley even as he handed me my diploma on graduation day.  I will never forget him. God bless the Boring family.  My prayers are with you.

The class of '70 had our 40th reunion a couple of weeks ago.  We were made aware of Mr. Boring's poor health.  Everyone signed cards wishing him well, as well as offering birthday greetings.  I hope he saw this as the act of caring in which it was intended.
Mr. Boring was a man of integrity and respected by the students.  Even after 40 years, he is still important to us.  His legacy will not only live on in how he directly affected the students and staff of CHS, but in how those he touched have affected others.  We all were blessed to have had him in our lives.

Dad called last night to tell me of Dan's passing.  I was so sad to hear the news.  My oldest daughter Nicole has worked around Central High School these last couple of years as a Young Life leader and now working with some of the Special Education kids and she was always very proud that she was related to Dan and working at with his school.  She was very sad last night to hear of his passing as we all were.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mr. Boring was the principal while I attended Central ('63-'67). I never had to go to his office but I saw him everyday in the halls. My thoughts are with the family.

Dan Boring was the football coach for the four years I was at Central and he was a good friend while I was sports editor of the Centralite annual my senior year (1957-58). Mr. Boring was decidedly "old school" in the best ways possible.  He was a quiet strength to the halls of Central High School.

I remember transferring to CHS my junior year and thinking, "Don't ever get on Mr. Boring's bad side."  Thankfully, my first impression was completely wrong.  I came to know Mr. Boring as a caring, just, and helpful man.  He was an advocate for student involvement and supported teachers. 

One of my fondest memories...Mr. Boring was known to never smile, so it became the goal of many students to make him laugh.  We hit the jackpot with a drama dept sketch. When he laughed out loud at one our Hollywood Squares jokes, I felt a warm sense of triumph. We returned to Mr. Boring only a small portion of what he had given us time and again: a sense of connection, community, and school spirit.  Mr. Boring will always be a special part of my story.  He was a great man!

Everytime I think of Mr. Boring, I can't help but smile.  He was one of the best educators I every meet.  I will always remember my first day at Central (class of 77), when he asked me if I was the last of the Justices?  I was.  He was at Central when my sister and 2 brothers went there also (classes of 67, 70, and 73).  My wife also graduated from Central (class of 80), so Mr. Boring has touched all of my family. I was blessed to have Mr. Boring as my Principal at Central High School (Class of '77). He was always friendly to me when I saw him, and I have one particular fond memory of him. It was my senior year and I got called to the Principal's office one afternoon. I had never been in trouble or called to the office before and was scared to death! When I got there Mr. Boring asked me to come in and sit down, then we just had a nice chat. I never knew why I was called that day, but I've thought of it often and it makes me smile.
