

Boring, Dan York – age 90, of Knoxville, passed away on October 11, 2010 after a brief illness. He was born August 30, 1920 in Knoxville and was raised and lived nearly all of his life in the Fountain City community. He graduated from Central High School in 1940 where he played blocking back on the Bobcats’ football team and was a member of the undefeated and untied 1936 and 1939 squads. He then attended the University of Chattanooga on a football scholarship. In addition to playing football at Chattanooga he proved to be a successful boxer as well, earning a Golden Glove award. His studies were interrupted by World War II when he was called to serve in the United States Army as an M.P. After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1946 at the rank of sergeant, he returned to Knoxville to complete his bachelor’s degree at the University of Tennessee. He then began his career as a coach and educator at Landon High School in Jacksonville, Florida, while simultaneously earning a master’s degree at the University of Florida. In 1951 he returned to Knoxville and Central High School as head football coach, a position he held until 1957, leading the Bobcats to a 53-16-6 record during his tenure. He was named principal of Central High School in 1958 and served in that position until his retirement in 1982, educating and mentoring thousands of young people in that time. After retiring as an educator, he served for 23 years as a bailiff for the late Hon. Ray L. Jenkins of the Knox County Criminal Court. He was a lifelong member and deacon of Fountain City Presbyterian Church. He was inducted into the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame in 1990, named Friend of Fountain City in 1992, and has received numerous other awards and honors for his service to the community. He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph Albert and Daisy York Boring and sisters Louise Tindell and Betty Kelly, step-granddaughter, Brandy Maples. Survivors include his devoted wife of fifty-nine years Mary Ruth (Walters) Boring of Knoxville, son Danny (Laura) Boring of Knoxville, daughter Janie (Greg) Hart of Birmingham, AL, grandchildren Matt (Julie) Hart of Birmingham, AL, Andrew (Diana) Hart of Carmel, IN, Ashley (Jason) Fuller of Knoxville, and Nathan Hart of Birmingham, AL, sister Helen (Bob) Temple of Knoxville, and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 from 1:30pm to 3:00pm and from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel and the funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 2:00pm at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel with internment to follow in the Lynnhurst Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be former CHS football players from 1951 – 1957. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Dan Y.
