On February 28, 2025, Gwen McCarter gained her Heavenly wings. She was born March 15, 1935 to Gene and Keeble Brooks in Middlesboro, Kentucky. Gwen relocated to Knoxville, Tennessee, and married Ivan McCarter. They had 2 sons, Robin and Craig.
She became an elementary school teacher serving both Knox County and Knoxville City School systems. After 43 years of dedicated service, Gwen retired. Her students loved her. Each one held a special place in her heart and many stayed in touch with her as adults.
Gwen was a member of Lincoln Park Baptist Church for over eighty years. There she taught Sunday School and only recently had stepped down from teaching due to her declining health. Gwen knew the history of her church and on several occasions would speak on its long history. Her God and her church meant the world to her.
In her spare time, Gwen was a volunteer at Tennova North Hospital, not only serving there, but was also a part of the Chemo Cappers who knitted caps for cancer patients. She knitted hundreds making each cap special and pretty.
Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Keeble Brooks; husband, Ivan McCarter; son, Robin McCarter; sister, Twila Lowe; and grandson, Paul McCarter.
She is survived by son, Craig McCarter; special family friend and loved as a son, David Rowe; nephews, Tim and Phil Blevins; grandchildren, and many other precious cousins, friends, and her beloved school mates, The Slick Chicks.
