From the time Benji was born he ran at 100 mph (sometimes faster). He always had a smile and he loved bringing people joy. He loved taking his Toyota FJ off road and he loved cars. Benjamin Joseph “Benji” Lehmann, 22, of Crestwood, KY, died of esophageal cancer in Houston, TX at MD Anderson Cancer Center June 19, 2024.
He was born in Louisville, KY in 2001 to Susan (Sisler) Lehmann and Tim Lehmann and spent his early years in Macon, then Bogart, GA. Benji returned to KY and attended East Oldham Middle School before graduating from Oldham County High School. Benji played soccer, he played trumpet in the school band and he acted in three plays with the Oldham County Arts Center. He worked with Bounce ’n Round Inflatables since Middle School and he loved “bringing the fun” at his job. After graduation he also worked at Honda World of Louisville until he began his cancer treatment.
Benji loved his dogs, Cassie, Frankie and Leo. Most recently he enjoyed multiple overland trips off-roading with his FJ either by himself or with friends as he camped along the trails in Alabama and Kentucky. He was able to take a trip in March to Utah for the Off-Road Games which he enjoyed not realizing that the cancer had returned.
Benji will always be remembered for his smile and how he never met a stranger. He had a way of making people feel welcome and appreciated. He always tried to diffuse a tense situation with a smile or a laugh. Even during the most difficult times of treatment he never complained and he was a favorite of the nursing team.
At an early age Benji made a commitment to be a follower of Jesus. He trusted God. His life was not a perfect reflection of that commitment but hearing from friends who knew him and having conversations with him at the end of his life, it was clear that he trusted Jesus with his life and his death. He had a peace that God was in control and he was content with that. Benji would want every one of his friends and family to know God’s love and His grace. Benji’s favorite Bible verse was, “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9
Benji was preceded in death by grandparents Nancy and Bob Sisler; cousins, Duane and Jess Albright; uncle, Gary Sisler and three siblings by miscarriage. He is survived by parents, Susan and Tim Lehmann; brother, Jonathan Lehmann; grandparents, Rose Marie and Robert Lehmann; Aunts and Uncles, Lois/Darrel Ekstrom, Sharon/John Albright, Laura Sisler, and cousins, Josh, Christy and Jake Ekstrom, Delaney Albright and Matthew Sisler and countless friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Houston Haven Ministry (www.HoustonHaven.com) or Southeast Christian Church La Grange Campus.
